For Qualifying Flood Victims

The Galveston County Community Action Council (GCCAC), through the Texas Department of Housing & Community Services, has been providing money to assist persons in Brazoria, Galveston, Fort Bend and Wharton counties who have been negatively impacted by Hurricane Harvey. Residents currently habitating in one of the four counties served by GCCAC must be income eligible, i.e., meet certain income guidelines as established by the federal government. Persons living in Wharton County seeking assistance should call 409-765-7878, which will be routed through the Galveston office until service is returned to the office, which was destroyed by Harvey. Their office is located at 1506 N. Alabama Road in Wharton.

Disaster Recovery Centers

Change Hours Of Operation

State of Texas/FEMA Disaster Recovery Centers have changed their hours of operation. The center in Wharton County, located at the Wharton Civic Center, will be open 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday. All 40 centers will offer in-person support to individuals and businesses in counties included in the Texas federal disaster declaration for Hurricane Harvey and the subsequent floods. Recovery specialists from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA), the State and other agencies are at the centers to talk about assistance and to help anyone who needs guidance in filing an application.

Blue Ribbons Show Support for Law Enforcement

El Campo Clerical Para-Professional Association, ECISD school secretaries are having a chicken fried steak fundraiser Wednesday, Oct. 4. Texas Legends Topic Of Davis’ Program

Prairie Days Fest Set For Oct. 7

Alamo Park will be the site of this year’s Prairie Days Festival on Saturday, Oct. 7. Festivities start at 10 a.m. and conclude at 11 p.m. There will be a car show, entertainment, children’s activities, crafts, food, games, a motorcycle fun run and 5K Color Run. Baseball Tourney Helps With Medical Costs

A baseball tournament for Jolee’s fight against Chiari Malformation will be held at the Rotary Park, Saturday, Oct. 7. Both men’s USSSA and coed teams are invited to participate. There will be a $200 entry fee and $10 umpire fee. All balls will be provided. Raffle tickets are $5 each or five for $20. Prizes include a wooden bench and wooden cooler. St. Mary’s Parish Annual Festival Coming

The St. Mary’s Parish Annual Festival and Homecoming in the new St. Mary’s Nada Community Center will be Sunday, Oct. 8. Barbecue beef and sausage dinner will be served from 11 am to 1:30 p.m. Adults $10 per plate and children under 12 are $5. Plates-to-go will be available through 1 p.m. Keith Kallina will perform music during the meal period. Auction starts at 1 p.m. Refreshments will be served all day and evening. Activities include Bingo, plant and cake walk, kids games, train ride, water slides and clown. A dance will be 2 - 6 p.m. with music by South Texas Czechs with a drawing at 8:30 p.m.

Garden Club Trip Open To Guests

Members and guests may sign up for Wharton Garden Club’s Oct. 12 field trip by chartered bus to the Cockrell Butterfly Center located at the Houston Museum of Natural Science. The $25 fee includes the bus ride and an hour and a half guided tour by a horticulturalist to the 7th floor greenhouse and the rainforest conservatory. Lunch will be at Sweet Tomatoes or a similar venue (lunch on your own). Public Rosary Celebrates Fatima Anniversary

The public is invited to a public rosary to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Our Lady of Fatima when three shepherd children reported apparitions of the Blessed Virgin Mary on Oct. 13, 1917. The event will begin with a time of praise at 11:30 p.m. followed by praying the rosary at noon Saturday, Oct. 14 at the gazebo of St.Robert’s Catholic Church on Tegner.


Church Honors Pastor With Celebration

The congregation of Mt. Sinai Missionary Baptist Church, 1010 Grace, is hosting an appreciation celebration for Pastor J.C. Williams at 3 p.m., Oct. 15. Guest speaker will be the Rev. C. W. Gaines, pastor at New Spirit of Life Missionary Baptist Church in Houston. All are invited to attend.

St. Robert’s Presents Fall Festival

Free Items To Flood Victims Available

The El Campo Crisis Center Resale Store has clothes, shoes, bedding and towels to give away to any hurricane victims. All of this has been donated from the community for this reason.

Quilt Exhibit Open At Museum

The El Campo Museum of Natural History hosts a quilt show featuring quilts from the El Campo Casual Quilters. The exhibit opened Tuesday, Sept. 13. Drop by to see beautiful handwork done by local quilters. The Museum is open 10 a.m. to noon and 1 to 5 p.m., Tuesday through Friday and 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday.

TOPS Meeting On Weekly Basis

TOPS Club, Inc. (Take Pounds Off Sensibly) will have a weekly chapter meeting from 9 - 10 a.m. on Tuesdays at the Northside Education Center, Room 105. Meetings focus on nutrition, exercise, motivation and wellness education. Those who are interested are welcome to attend.

Local Library Offers Free Programs

The El Campo Branch Library, 200 W. Church, is open six days a week: Monday 9:30 a.m. - 8 p.m., Tuesday through Friday, 9:30 a.m. - 6 p.m. and Saturday, 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. Programs include story time for children ages 3 - 5 at 10:15 a.m. each Tuesday and toddler time for those ages 6 months to age 3 at 10:15 a.m. on Wednesdays. Heritage Center Offers Exercise, Bingo

The Heritage Center, a non-profit organization with a $50 membership fee, is open to men and women 50 and older. The center, open Monday through Friday 9 a.m. - 5 p.m., offers use of exercise machines, “Silver Sneakers” chair exercise sessions for those 63 years and older, pool table, dominoes, lending library, lap top computers, games, bingo and opportunities to volunteer. Covered dish luncheons are held once a month. The center is located at 803 Fahrenthold.
