Starting Up In June

Friday, June 1 will be the first day for youngsters and adults to register for the El Campo Branch Library’s summer reading clubs. Be sure to pick up a schedule of summertime activities for the kids which start up in June. Some will include family time starting at 10 a.m. each Tuesday; toddler time for those ages 6 months to age 4 at 10:15 a.m. on Wednesdays; young adult program for those ages 10 to 18 from 3:30 - 4:30 p.m. each Monday and movie time each Thursday starting at 3:30 p.m. (movies to be announced). There will also be an arts and crafts session each Friday morning from 10 - 11 a.m. for kids ages five and older. The library is located at 200 W. Church and is open six days a week: Monday from 9:30 a.m. - 8 p.m., Tuesday through Friday, 9:30 a.m. - 6 p.m. and Saturday, 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. For information about other special programs, call 543-2362.

Louise ISD Accepting Applications for Kindergarten and Pre-K

Parents are encouraged to register children for Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten for the 2018-19 school year. Bring your child’s social security card, certified birth certificate, and up-to-date immunization records. If registering a child for Pre-K, the district must have proof of income to determine federal reimbursement, but the student can be accepted regardless of income. Pre-K is open to all students, including transfers with no fees or tuition required. Students turning four years old on or before Sept. 1, 2018 will be eligible for Pre-K. Students turning five years old on or before Sept. 1, 2018 will be eligible for Kindergarten. For questions, please call the Elementary office at 979-648-2982, ext. 202.

Registration In Progress

El Campo ISD 2018 - 2019 school registration for new Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten students will continue through Friday, May 25 (8 a.m. - 4 p.m.). Age requirement for Pre-Kindergarten is 4 years old on or before Sept. 1, 2018; Kindergarten is 5 years old on or before Sept. 1, 2018. Parents or legal guardians may register their children at Myatt Elementary School, 501 W. Webb. Bring original birth certificate, shot record, social security card and photo ID (parents). Pre-Kindergarten will need to bring income records(s) for the last 30 days for house hold or SNAP Letter to qualify. Students must be four years of age prior to Sept. 1, 2018. Students entering school for the first time will not be allowed to pre-register or be admitted to school unless all immunizations have been completed. Knights of Columbus Council 2490 will sponsor a Community Blood Drive on Wednesday May 30 from 3- 8 p.m. at the Columbus Club on Armory Rd.

Football, Cheer Program Open To Youth

Registration for the 2018 El Campo Youth Football and Cheerleader program will be two dates: 9 a.m. - noon on Saturdays, June 2 and June 16 at the Northside Education Center on Depot. El Campo Farmers Market

El Campo Farmers Market will continue at downtown Evans Park the first Saturday of May, June and August from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Evans Park. Vendor registration is free (no fee for booth space). To register, go online (http://cityofelcampo.org/farmers_market_registration.php) or drop by City Hall to fill out the form.

Library Books For Sale

All branches of the Wharton County Library System have started updating their children’s collections. Most books that are removed from the collection are given to our Friends of the Library Bookstore, which sells them for 10 cents to the public. The bookstore is located at the Main Library in Wharton, and is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. They sell children’s books, as well as adult hardback and paperbacks.

Free Services Offered

The Mainstream Connection, a 501 c3 organization offers help with pantry assistance, counseling, immigration cases, waivers, translations, evaluations, reference letters, extreme and unusual hardship letters, residency applications/renewals, citizenship applications, notary services and DACA applications/renewals. Museum Has Twilight Tuesdays

The El Campo Museum of Natural History will host Twilight Tuesdays the first Tuesday of each month as the facility stays open until 7:30 p.m. The next Twilight Tuesday will be June 5. For information about Twilight Tuesdays or other programs at the museum, call Director Cheri McGuirk at 543-6885.

Library Open Six Days Per Week

El Campo Branch Library, 200 W. Church, is open six days a week: Monday from 9:30 a.m. - 8 p.m., Tuesday through Friday, 9:30 a.m. - 6 p.m. and Saturday, 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. Some programs include story time for children ages 3-5 at 10:15 a.m. each Tuesday and toddler time for those ages 6 months to 3 at 10:15 a.m. on Wednesdays.

TOPS Meeting On Weekly Basis

TOPS Club, Inc. (Take Pounds Off Sensibly) meets 9 - 10 a.m. on Tuesdays at the Northside Education Center, Room 105.

Free English Classes At The Library

Free English classes are available at 10 a.m. every Saturday at the El Campo Branch Library, 200 W. Church. For information, call 543-2392. Gratis! Clase de Ingles Cada Sabado a las, 10 a.m., 200 W. Church St., La Biblioteca de El Campo.

Genealogy Group Meets Monthly


A genealogy group meets at 2 p.m. on the third Wednesday of each month (except December) at the El Campo Branch Library located at 200 W. Church. Forms available at the library.

Pilgrim Rest Distributes Commodities

Pilgrim Rest Missionary Baptist Church Labor of Love distributes commodities at 7 a.m. the first Thursday of each month. For information, call 541-7493.

Heritage Center Offers Exercise, Bingo

The Heritage Center, a non-profit organization at 803 Fahrenthold with a $50 membership fee, is open to men and women 50 and older. The center, open Monday through Friday 9 a.m. - 5 p.m., offers use of exercise machines, chair exercise sessions, pool table, dominoes, lending library, lap top computers, games, bingo and opportunities to volunteer. Covered dish luncheons are held once a month.

Legion Hosts Friday Night Bingo

American Legion Post 251 host bingo games every Fridays with doors opening at 5 p.m., card sales at 6 p.m. and games at 7 p.m. Snack bar will be open.

Veteran’s Service Officer Hours

Wharton County Veteran’s service officer hours are Monday, Tuesday, Thursday in Wharton from 8 - 11:30 a.m. and noon - 4:30 p.m. 11:30 a.m. - noon is lunch time. Wednesday will be at the El Campo Library, 200 W. Church, El Campo, 77437 from 9:30 a.m. - 4 p.m. Friday will be in Wharton from 8 - 11:30 a.m. by appointment only and noon - 4:30 p.m. is administrative time. For information, call 532-1311.

Manna Meals Offers Food Monday, Thursday

Manna Meals is offered at no cost every Monday and Thursday from 5 - 6:30 p.m. All are welcome. Meals are prepared then served by local congregations at 500 Foerster (between Fourth and Fifth Streets in El Campo). For information, call 505-9362; mannamealsec@gmail.com.

Bulletin Board is a community service to promote one-time events for nonprofits. The Leader-News requests only one representative submit items with contact information. Items will be edited.
