For Qualifying Flood Victims

The Galveston County Community Action Council (GCCAC), through the Texas Department of Housing & Community Services, has been providing money to assist persons in Brazoria, Galveston, Fort Bend and Wharton counties who have been negatively impacted by Hurricane Harvey. Residents currently habitating in one of the four counties served by GCCAC must be income eligible, i.e., meet certain income guidelines as established by the federal government. Persons living in Wharton County seeking assistance should call 409-765-7878, which will be routed through the Galveston office until service is returned to the office, which was destroyed by Harvey. Their office is located at 1506 N. Alabama Road in Wharton.

Disaster Center Changes Hours Of Operation

State of Texas/FEMA Disaster Recovery Centers have changed their hours of operation. The center in Wharton County, located at the Wharton Civic Center, will be open 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday. All 40 centers will offer in-person support to individuals and businesses in counties included in the Texas federal disaster declaration for Hurricane Harvey and the subsequent floods. Recovery specialists from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA), the State and other agencies offer assistance and help persons through the application process.

Craig-Harriss American Legion Post and Auxiliary No. 251 will hold their executive meetings Wednesday, Oct. 11 at 7 p.m. at the American Legion Hall. Those attending will discuss the upcoming Veterans Day celebration.

Historian Presents Program On Parkers

Joe Tom Davis, local author and historian, will present a special program on the “Saga of Cynthia Ann Parker and Quanah Parker” at 10:30 a.m., Friday, Oct. 13 at the El Campo Branch Library, 200 W. Church. Members and their guests are invited to attend.

Public Rosary Celebrates Fatima Anniversary

The public is invited to a public rosary to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Our Lady of Fatima when three shepherd children reported apparitions of the Blessed Virgin Mary on Oct. 13, 1917. The event will begin with a time of praise at 11:30 p.m. followed by praying the rosary at noon Saturday, Oct. 14 at the gazebo of St. Robert’s Catholic Church on Tegner.

Women’s Conference Set For Oct. 14

The public is invited to a women’s conference sponsored by Christian Life Center. Guest speaker is E. Wheeler. The event will be 1 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 14 at the El Campo Civic Center.

Spot Trot 5K To Be Held In Wharton

The 9th Annual SPOT Trot/5K Race, in memory of Amber Hensarling, D.V.M., will be held Saturday, Oct. 14 at Riverfront Park in Wharton. Registration is on-site only starting at 8 a.m. The 5K begins at 9 a.m. and Trot and activities get under way at 10 a.m.


Church Honors Pastor With Celebration

The congregation of Mt. Sinai Missionary Baptist Church, 1010 Grace, is hosting an appreciation celebration for Pastor J.C. Williams at 3 p.m., Oct. 15. Guest speaker will be the Rev. C. W. Gaines, pastor at New Spirit of Life Missionary Baptist Church in Houston. All are invited to attend.

St. Robert’s Presents Fall Festival

St. Robert Bellarmine Catholic Church will host its annual parish festival at the Columbus Hall (KC Hall) on Sunday, Oct. 15. Legion Post, Auxiliary To Discuss Veterans Day

A general meeting will be held for members of Craig-Harriss American Legion Post and Auxiliary No. 251 at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 15. A meal will be served at 7 p.m. Auxiliary members are asked to bring a dessert and all members are strongly encouraged to attend. The upcoming Veterans Day celebration will be the topic of discussion.

Candlelight Vigil Remembers Lost Lives

A community candlelight vigil will take place in Evans Park starting at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 17. The event, sponsored by the Crisis Center of Matagorda and Wharton Counties, will remember each victim by name who lost their life to domestic and/or sexual violence last year. The public is invited to attend.

Preschoolers To Host Hamburger Supper

Presbyterian Preschool hamburger supper fundraiser will be held on Thursday, Oct. 19 from 4:30 - 6:30 p.m. at 203 W. Calhoun. Plates are $7.50 and drive-thru only. Tickets may be purchased from any student or by calling the office at 543-7474.

ECHS Graduates Celebrate 40 Years

The El Campo High graduating class of 1977 will celebrate it’s 40 year reunion Saturday, Oct. 21 at The 409 Club, located in downtown El Campo across from the Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture office. Lutherans To Serve Sausage Dinner

Christ Lutheran Church will host its annual Sausage Fest, 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. (dine-in or drive-thru), Sunday, Oct. 22. Dinner tickets are $9 each and available by calling the church office at 543-5450. There will also be a bake sale inside the fellowship hall. The church is located at 1401 Ave. I.

First Lutheran Hosting BBQ Dinner

TOPS Meeting On Weekly Basis

TOPS Club, Inc. (Take Pounds Off Sensibly) will have a weekly chapter meeting from 9 - 10 a.m. on Tuesdays at the Northside Education Center, Room 105. Meetings focus on nutrition, exercise, motivation and wellness education. Those who are interested are welcome to attend.

Local Library Offers Free Programs

The El Campo Branch Library, 200 W. Church, is open six days a week: Monday 9:30 a.m. - 8 p.m., Tuesday through Friday, 9:30 a.m. - 6 p.m. and Saturday, 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. Programs include story time for children ages 3 - 5 at 10:15 a.m. each Tuesday and toddler time for those ages 6 months to age 3 at 10:15 a.m. on Wednesdays. Heritage Center Offers Exercise, Bingo

The Heritage Center, a non-profit organization with a $50 membership fee, is open to men and women 50 and older. The center, open Monday through Friday 9 a.m. - 5 p.m., offers use of exercise machines, “Silver Sneakers” chair exercise sessions for those 63 years and older, pool table, dominoes, lending library, lap top computers, games, bingo and opportunities to volunteer. Covered dish luncheons are held once a month. The center is located at 803 Fahrenthold.

The Mainstream Connection, a 501 c3 organization offers help with pantry assistance, counseling, immigration cases, waivers, translations, evaluations, reference letters, extreme and unusual hardship letters, residency applications/renewals, citizenship applications, notary services and DACA applications/renewals.
