Giddings can't come close to Lady 'Birds The Lady 'Birds hosted Giddings Friday and came out with a nice 3-0 win as they approach the opening of district volleyball competition. Giddings was clearly outmatched during the entire event as the Lady Birds cruised to a three-game sweep. The first game went to El Campo easily for a 25-9 win with some great serves by the Lady 'Birds. After such a dominant showing in game one, Giddings seemed to already accept defeat. The Lady 'Birds had another outing with strong serves and a great presence at the net. Meredith Bard blocked several shots and took over the net for El Campo to help with the win. Kelsey Gangl led the team with outstanding serves, including three aces and one late in the game to all-butclinch a win. With the game almost in hand, Kaylan Gangl and Bard combined for strong defense and a couple of blocks and the Lady Ricebirds took the second game 25-8. The third game was the strongest showing for Giddings. The Lady Buffs challenged El Campo early in the match, but it still was not enough for a win. After a few back-and-forth points, El Campo pulled ahead 7-4. Strong serving by Kaylan Gangl boosted the Lady 'Birds to a 13-4 lead before Giddings could score again. The Lady Buffs slowly secured a few more points, but it was only enough to push the Lady 'Birds to finish the game quicker. Ashley Zboril played strong at the net once again and El Campo moved ahead 22-13. Giddings eventually left after a 25-14 win in the third game and a 3-0 match sweep by the Lady 'Birds. Zboril led the Lady 'Birds with 11 kills while Bard made 8 kills, Kaylan Gangl and Shelby Cooper each made 4, Kelsey Gangl and Lindsey Marik both made 2 and Ashley Brooks and Jessica Dornak both had 1 kill. Kaylan Gangl led El Campo in serving with 17 service points. Kelsey Gangl scored 15 points, Bard scored 14, Kristi Michaelsen scored 11, Brooks had 6, Zboril had 4, Amy Hardin had 3 and Alexis Cooper had 2 points. Kelsey and Kaylan Gangl both served up a team-high 6 aces while Bard served for 5 and Brooks and Michaelsen both had 2 aces. Stephanie Korenek led the defense with 9 digs. Alexis Cooper and Kelsey Gangl both had 3 digs, Shelby Cooper, Zboril, Bard and Michaelsen each had 2 and Kaylan Gangl and Brooks both had 1 dig. Bard connected for a team-high 6 blocks while Dornak made 3, Shelby Cooper and Kaylan Gangl both made 2 and Brooks and Zboril each made 1 block. |
