Freshmen split in series with Angleton El Campo's Freshman Red and White teams took on a tough Angleton squad and had split outcomes. The Red team topped the Wildcats 12-0 while the White team fell 24-6. Freshman Red Team Neither team scored until late in the third quarter, when El Campo broke the 0- 0 tie to take the lead. Shaquille Edwards broke free for a 40yard punt return to set up the first score of the game. Andrew Catete finished off the drive with a 4-yard touchdown run. The 2-point conversion failed, but the Ricebirds had the lead 6-0 with 1:52 left in the third quarter. Another punt return by Edwards set up Catete's second touchdown of the night. That return went 30 yards, deep into Wildcat territory. Catete completed the drive with a 3-yard run for a touchdown to give El Campo its final score of 12-0 with 4:29 remaining in the game. Catete led the 'Birds with 102 rushing yards on 8 carries while Stephen Anderson finished second with 63 yards on 10 carries. A.J. Owens was the leading receiver for El Campo. He caught a pass for 48 yards. Top tacklers on the night were Rosalino Salgado with 10, Anderson with 8, Catete with 7 and Ethan Kinder with 4. Freshman White Team Angleton scored early and put El Campo in a big deficit. The Ricebirds fought back to end the Wildcats' hopes of a shutout with a fourth-quarter touchdown. The Wildcats scored their first touchdown in the second quarter and made good on a 2-point conversion to take an 8-0 lead. Two more touchdowns and 2-point conversions in the third quarter put Angleton ahead 24-0, but El Campo found a way to score. The Ricebirds came back against a very physical Wildcat team and moved the ball deep into Angleton territory. Yisvan Ortiz finished El Campo's drive with a 1-yard touchdown run to put the 'Birds on the board at 24-6 with 4:02 left to play. Bryan Moreno was the leading rusher on the night for El Campo with 52 yards on 9 carries. Ortiz finished second with 7 carries for 44 yards. Robert Marek and George Olsovsky both caught 1 pass for 20 yards while Clayton Harkins received 1 pass for 8 yards. Harkins led the team in tackles with 5, Robert Lormand made 4 and Joe Flores made 3 tackles. Olsovsky made a great fumble recovery. |
