Justin Hurst Scholarship Turkey Shoot Sunday The first Justin Hurst Annual Memorial Scholarship Fund Turkey Shoot is Sunday starting at 1 p.m. at Taiton Hall. Bring your 12-gauge shotgun and have some fun. There will be a BB shoot for the kids ages 5-9 and 10-13. The kid who shoots out the most targets will win a BB gun, one out of each age group. Three shots for a $1, $2 rounds, $5 and $25 round. Many prizes to be given away.

WCYF Steer & Pen of Three Tag-In Steer and Pen of Three tag-ins are today from 8 to 11 a.m. at the Crescent Fairgrounds. Steer weight requirement is a minimum of 500 pounds, but not exceeding 750 pounds. Pen of Three weight is a maximum of 700 pounds. Beef Merit Heifer Draw begins at 1 p.m. All exhibitors are required to pay their $15 entry fee at this time. WCYF office: 677-3350.

First Baptist Hosts 'Fiesta' Service In honor of the Hispanic culture, its importance to Texas and El Campo, and the growing number of Hispanics worshipping and serving in leadership roles at First Baptist Church, the El Campo church is having a "Fiesta" service Sunday, Sept. 16 to be followed by a Mexican food covered-dish meal. Brother Rick DuBroc will preach, but music will be provided by Frankie Dominguez. He will also play dinner music during the meal in the fellowship hall. Members are encouraged not to miss this special Sunday, and Hispanics who would like to learn more about the activities of First Baptist Church are invited to attend and to stay for the noon meal. Services are broadcast on KULP, 1390-AM.

Christ Lutheran Sausage Fest The Christ Lutheran Church Annual Sausage Fest is Sunday, Sept. 16 at the ECVFD Training Center. Dine-in or togo plates are $6 and are available from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. There will also be a bake sale, quilt sale and live entertainment inside. For tickets, call 543-5450 or 543-3251.

2008 Senior Project Grad Meeting An ECHS Senior Class Project Graduation meeting will be Monday, Sept. 17 at 6 p.m. at Myatt Elementary. Students and parents are encouraged to attend.

American Legion and Auxiliary Meeting Craig-Harriss American Legion Post 251 and its Ladies Auxiliary hold their regular monthly meeting Tuesday, Sept. 18 in the hall beginning with a social at 6:30 p.m. A meal will be served at 7:15 p.m. Ladies Auxiliary members are asked to bring desserts.

Pork Steak Dinner Fund-raiser The Hillje-Louise 4-H Club will have a pork steak dinner Tuesday, Sept. 18 from 4:30-6:30 p.m. at Staff's Catering. Tickets are $6.50 per plate. For tickets call Sara at 979-332-0710 or Adeline at 543-6925. Plates to go only. Fund-raiser benefits club activities.

ECMH Hosts Blood Drive El Campo Memorial Hospital will host a blood drive in the front parking lot Tuesday, Sept. 18 from 11:30 a.m.-6:30 p.m. Bring picture identification.

Cholesterol Screening at ECMH El Campo Memorial Hospital's lab will offer various blood screenings Thursday, Sept. 20. Call 979-578-5185 for appointment (limited space available). Fast before this testing procedure for a more accurate reading (do not eat or drink for 12 hours). Cholesterol/Triglyceride test is $5, HDL, LDL & Triglyceride is $10 and the HDL, LDL & Triglyceride and Glucose is $15.

Learn How to Age Deer on the Hoof Wharton wildlife biologist David Lobpries will present a program to the Lost Prong Wildlife Management Association on how to age deer on the hoof. The program is Thursday, Sept. 20 at 6 p.m. at NewFirst National Bank. Dues ($15) are payable to LPWMA and will be accepted at the door, or may be mailed to P.O. Box 906, El Campo. Wildlife signs, at $15 each, will also be available at the meeting, and two door prizes will be offered - one for a youth, another for an adult.

WCYF Bringing in Golf Tourney, Triumphs The Wharton County Youth Fair has two big events coming up this fall. The 2nd Annual Golf Tournament is Saturday, Sept. 22 at the New Gulf Golf Course. On Saturday, Oct. 13, the Triumphs will play at the fairgrounds. To register for the golf tourney, or for more information on the tournament or the dance, please call the fair office at 677-3350.

KC BBQ Chicken Dinner Sept. 23 Knights of Columbus Council 2490 will have a barbecue chicken dinner Sunday, Sept. 23 at the KC Hall on Armory Road. Serving will begin at 11 a.m. Plates are $6.50 to go only.

Quarterly El Campo ARC Meeting The quarterly meeting of the ARC of El Campo will be held Monday, Sept. 24 at 6:30 p.m. at the 2nd Time Around Resale Shop at 1825 N. Mechanic St. Anyone interested in joining the ARC is welcome to attend. This group is also affiliated with the ARC of Texas and the ARC of the U.S. For more information call 543-5823.

Louise-Hillje Cook-off Sept. 29 Entries are being accepted for the Louise-Hillje Chamber Fall Festival Barbecue Cook-off, which is Saturday, Sept. 29. Falls and Balance Workshop A four-hour workshop will be offered Saturday, Sept. 22 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Rosenberg Civic Center. Focused on causes of falling, direct and indirect cost of falling, the four basic strategies in fall prevention, intrinsic and extrinsic reasons for falls, the five major fall risk factors, prevention, precautions and the five skills for better balance. Boosters Meet Every Monday Ricebird Booster Club meets every Monday during football season at 6:30 p.m. in the weight room classroom. Game film will be viewed first followed by a business meeting. Everyone is invited.

Veterans Service Office Hours The office of Wharton County Veterans Service Officer Harvey H. Stelzel Jr. will be open the month of September every Tuesday and Wednesday. Office hours are 7:30 a.m.-noon and 1-4 p.m. The office is located at 1017 N. Alabama Road in Wharton. Phone 532-1311.

New Aquatic Center Hours The following schedule is currently in effect at the El Campo Aquatic Center: Tuesday through Thursday, 6-11 a.m. and 4-7 p.m.; Friday, 6-11 a.m.; Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Sunday, 1-6 p.m. Yoga, Monday at 5 p.m.; water aerobics, Tuesday and Thursday, 6 a.m. and 6 p.m.; arthritis water therapy, Tuesday and Thursday, 10:15 a.m. Call the ECAC at 543-1468 for more information.

Spay/Neuter Assistance Available The Matagorda County SPCA has a program to help financially disadvantaged persons in Wharton, Jackson, Matagorda and the southern part of Colorado County get their dogs/cats spayed/neutered. B&G Club Southwest Airlines Tickets The Boys & Girls Club of El Campo will conduct a drawing at the Oct. 11 Snag, Tag and Brag Seafood Fund-raiser, with the prize being two tickets on Southwest Airlines to any city to which the airline flies within the continental U.S. Tickets are $5 each or six for $25. They may be obtained at the club, from directors and staff or from the Leader-News (which, unfortunately, is currently under construction. The back door may be used.)

Might Want to Use Back Door of L-N Due to needed repairs at the El Campo Leader-News, the front of the building is under construction.
