Boot Scootin' Boogie
Kickin' up their heels for Heritage Center
By QUALA MATOCHA lifestyle@leader-news.com

L-N Photo by Quala Matocha As organizers of the Cattle Call's decorations this year, Sallie Wilkins and Rita Hancock (l-r) are asking for your creative assistance. With a collection of Western boots, they are needing volunteers to paint and decorate them to use as centerpieces for the event. Boots must be finished by the first week of October, so there isn't much time. Please give Wilkins a call to help out.
It's time once again to get out your Western duds and expect a great time at this year's 2nd Annual Cattle Call benefiting the Heritage Center.

The event, which is set to begin at 6:30 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 6, at the American Legion Hall, will be decorated accordingly.

Using the colors of turquoise and brown, Western boot centerpieces will take on their own individual personality depending on their creator.

Sallie Wilkins and Rita Hancock are heading up this project and are in need of persons to paint and embellish the boots. They need to be finished by the first week in October.

"We need volunteers to decorate the boots," said Wilkins.

The boots do not have to be finished in any particular colors or style. "Use your imagination-it's art," she said.

So far some Texas-theme boots have been created, as well as one called "Booty by the Sea" by Susan Lipscomb. El Campo Art Association member Annie Mae Gloeckner created a simple design on a black boot bearing a Texas flag and bluebonnets. Andrea McCann's blue colored boot is fashioned like a bird house.

Each boot, which will be part of a silent auction at the event to raise funds, will bear the name of the person(s) who designed and donated the item.

In the event there aren't enough boots to serve as centerpieces, the ladies have planned on using hurricane lanterns filled with either flowers or candles. Some of the boots will also be filled with floral arrangements.

If you would like to decorate one or more boots, give Wilkins a call at 979- 543-6855.

To attend the Cattle Call, tickets at $50 each are available at the El Campo Chamber office or from select individuals. Dinner will consist of mesquite grilled beef tenderloins and music will be by Horizon, featuring band member Carl Merta, formerly of El Campo.

The Cattle Call will also hold a drawing for a pen-of-three F-1 tiger striped heifers or a $3,000 gift card for the winning ticket. The second place winner will receive a $750 American Express gift card. Tickets are $75 each with only be 250 tickets being sold. There will also be a live auction of about 10-12 items.
