District satisfied with progress at new ECMS
By BRENDA SOMMER news1@leader-news.com

Construction at the new El Campo Middle School is coming along quite well, with completion expected at least by Jan. 23, although builders are shooting for an earlier date.

"El Campo Middle School is behind because of rain, but they're doing everything they can to catch up," said El Campo ISD Superintendent Mark Pool. He updated the ECISD board of trustees on the status of the project during the board's regular monthly meeting Sept. 18.

"I'm perfectly satisfied with what's going on there," Pool said. "They're bringing in extra help, working nights and weekends, everything they can to get that project back on schedule."

The new middle school and a practice gym at the high school - being built as a result of a $19.9 million bond package approved in 2005 - are both behind schedule, but within budget, although the budget was increased early-on to $22 million.

The middle school, along FM 2765, was originally expected to be completed by late December, but was delayed from its original completion date by unusually rainy weather in January and February and again in June and July, and also because of a shortage of brick masons.

Delays mean the district might have to move from the old to the new building about two weeks after classes resume in January. But builders hope they can bump back the Jan. 23 completion date to mid- December or early January.

The Sept. 10 progress report on the school that was presented to the board also noted:

  • The building is dried-in except for roof areas with different elevations, which are temporarily covered with plastic sheeting;

  • Talks are under way with American Electric Power and the Texas Department of Transportation about putting the current overhead electrical lines underground along FM 2765, which would be done when TxDOT road work commences at the site; and

  • Coordination has been done to install a square Masonic cornerstone on the northeast corner of the east wing of Area II of the school. That marker will be just shy of 30-inches square.
