After downing Foster Tuesday in what could be considered an upset in Distrtict 24-4A volleyball, the Lady Ricebirds lost in five games Friday on their home court to Seven Lakes 25-20, 25-23, 20-25, 10-25 and 11-15.
El Campo's 1-1 district (11-11 season) record dropped the Lady 'Birds into an early-season two-way tie with Foster, which rebounded after its loss to El Campo to defeat Lamar Consolidated Friday in three games, 25-14, 25-16 and 25-19.
After Friday's games, Seven Lakes and Terry were tied for first place in district with 2-0 records. They played each other Friday.
El Campo traveled to Lamar Cons. Tuesday to take on the 0-2 Lady Mustangs.
El Campo hit the ball hard in games one and two.
"We were putting lots of kills down those first two games," Matula said. "They just started playing better defense in the third and fourth games. They just seemed to be everywhere. We tried to tip it and they were there for the tips. They just played great defense.
Matula said despite the loss, with several long rallies it was an enjoyable game for spectators.
"It was a great game. The rallies were long. There'd be five, six, seven, eight, maybe 10 times before somebody would score a point. There was lots of action," the Lady 'Bird coach said.
