Pioneers take on St. Michael

St. Philip's volleyball teams took on Weimar St. Michael Sept. 20 in two tough matches.

Both outings ended up as losses for the Pioneers, but the A and B teams played strong team ball in the matches.

St. Philip A

The Pioneers played a tough match with St. Michael and almost came away with a win.

St. Philip stayed close in the first game, thanks in part to a great game by Rebecca Korenek. She led the Pioneers with 2 points and 3 spikes to within a few points from victory.

St. Michael was able to pull away with a 25-23 win.

The second game went to St. Philip.

Lauren Gregurek had a great game serving for the Pioneers. She scored 7 points, including 2 aces, as St. Philip earned a 25-23 win.

St. Michael won the last game and claimed victory in the match.

The Pioneers stayed close again and were led by strong play at the net by Sally Johnson. She scored a team-high 3 spikes in the 25-22 defeat.

Even though they ultimately lost, the Pioneers earned some solid statistics against St. Michael.

Kirby Quintero led the Pioneers in serving with 9 points. Gregurek served 8 points, Amber Kresta served 6, Korenek served 5, Kathryn Hancock served 3 and Shelby Snyder and Johnson both served for 2 points.

While serving, Korenek and Gregurek led the Pioneers with 2 aces. Johnson and Snyder each had 1 ace.

Korenek made a team-high 7 spikes in the match while Johnson made 6.

St. Philip B

The Pioneers fell to St. Michael in two games despite strong team play.

St. Michael defeated St. Philip 25-18 in the first game and 25- 8 in the second.

Taylor Fuechec led the Pioneers in serving with 6 points while Rebecca Dornak served 3, Alexis Crowell served 2 and Amy Bremser served an ace for 1 point.
