Lady 'Birds struggle in Terry match Terry took the first two varsity volleyball games in close decisions 28-26 and 25-23. The Lady 'Birds fought back to take the third game in commanding fashion 25-16, but game four finished the match and gave Terry the win. El Campo fell behind early and lost 25-9 to lose the match 3-1. The Lady 'Birds ran into a tough defensive wall at the net and Terry seemed almost unstoppable. "They were just taller," Diana Matula, head coach of the Lady 'Birds, said. "They were jumping. We were hitting the balls and setting balls into their big hitter. She has a good vertical and we just couldn't get the ball over her. That was one of the things that hurt us. They were getting up there and blocking our shots." Despite the loss, El Campo played a strong match. Matula said she thought her team performed well and simply ran into a tough team - one that she said could be the best in the district. "I thought we played hard every point," Matula said. "There were a couple of times where we let down, but I thought we played hard and gave a good effort and just got out played." Now 2-2 on the season and tied with Foster for third place in District 24-4A, the Lady 'Birds will need to improve in the second half of district play. El Campo finished the first half Tuesday night in Bay City and will host Foster Friday. "We're just going to have to go to Bay City and beat Bay City," Matula said. "We're going to have to work hard in the second half (of district) and try to be 5-0." |
