Glen Flora VFD presents program on fire safety

Fire safety was the program presented during the Hillje-Louise 4-H Club meeting Monday. Members and guests met at Wharton County Electric Co-op. President Kelsey Supak called the meeting to order, Megan Socha led the United States flag pledge and Kori Stancliff recited the 4-H pledge. The parents' pledge was led by Sara Weathers.

The minutes were read by Kori Stancliff and Megan Socha gave the treasurer's report. A report of the club's recent fund-raiser was given by club managers and members and parents were congratulated on a very successful outcome. A drawing was held for the member who sold the most tickets. The winner was Jr. Tompkins. He received a movie gift package.

Brianna Dorotik was welcomed as a new member of the Clover Kids, along with her mother, Denise Dorotik and younger sister, Bridget.

A program on fire safety, stressing a meeting place for family members, utilizing smoke alarms, storage of chemicals in the home and garage was presented by Fire Chief Martin Garcia. Special guests were members of the Glen Flora Volunteer Fire Department: Peggy Todd, Damian Todd, Martin Garcia, Frank Partida, Adam Rodriguez, Henry Longoria and Ryan Cisneros. Rodriguez suited up in fireman's apparel and the members were able to observe his actions going into a fire, also how the oxygen tank works and alarms if the fireman becomes injured. Then members were able to climb aboard the fire engine and spray water with the assistance of the chief.

The youth received a fireman's hat and badge.

Kelsey Supak, club president, presented the firemen with a gift bag and 4-H cups.

A Halloween party followed and winners of the costume contest were:

Most Creative - Megan Socha;

Most Original - Marla Tompkins

Cutest - Courtney Boone

Scariest - Kelsey Supak

Musical chairs was also played and the winner was Kelsey Supak.

Winners were awarded prizes.

Refreshments of chicken salad, tuna salad and ham sandwiches, chips, dips, cookies, brownies and sodas provided by members were served.

The next meeting will be held at 6 p.m. Monday, Nov. 12 at WCEC.
