Comfort Wood Chapter names new members

Members of Comfort Wood Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution met Thursday in the home of Lila Gene George in Wharton. Sharing hostess duties was Idanel Sellars of El Campo.

The symbol of the new national administration is the golden pineapple, which has signified hospitality and kindness since Colonial times and reflects the theme of the administration: "The Spirit of Hospitality Opens Doors of Opportunity."

The meeting was opened by the ringing of a golden pineapple bell to reflect hospitality. Guest, Sandy Lovell of Egypt was welcomed.

New members are Sue Carmichael of East Bernard by transfer, whose patriot is John Smoot, and Darlene Byrd of Wharton by application approval. Byrd's patriot is James Dillard. Also, Gloria, Kim and Rachael Goynes of El Campo, whose patriot is William Armstrong; and Deena Poncik of Robstown, whose patriot is George Harlan.

After the opening ceremony, mini programs were given by Kathleen Thonsgaard, national defense chairwoman; Sellars, flag facts chairperson. Gene Jackson, secretary, read the minutes of the May meeting and Pat Sanders, treasurer, gave her report covering the last three months. Sanders also read a thank you note from scholarship recipient, Amanda Jones.

Committee chairmen reports by Seewee Dupuy, conservation, and Ann Gleason, volunteer information were also given.

Annie Stafford reported on the fall forum and trip to patriots' cemetery locations made this summer. Gleason told of the constitution luncheon in Bay City. Hazel Foltyn shared infor- mation about the Wharton High School AFROTC banquet.

A 50-year certificate is being ordered for Elizabeth Waddell. A reception will be held in Columbus in her honor in January or February. State Regent Lynn Forney Young will be attending along with family and friends.

The meeting ended with the ringing of the pineapple bell. Refreshments were served.
