A window air-conditioning unit is believed to be the culprit in a Wednesday night fire which did heavy damage to a home in the Isaacson Municipal Utility District.

Flames were already rolling from a southern window at the 1014 N. Liberty home of Eloy Vasquez when El Campo volunteer firefighters arrived at the scene shortly after 7 p.m. Wednesday.

Vasquez had come home just a few moments before.

"I barely showed up. I saw the flames and the smoke coming out of the window," he said. "I walked in and there was so much smoke; smoke everywhere."

Vasquez said he tried to find a water hose to put out the fire, but was unable to do so.

"So I filled a bucket with water and threw it in. But there was smoke everywhere. I got out of there," he said.

Four adults normally live in the home, he said, although none were home at the time of the blaze.

The house is insured, Vasquez said, adding he was in the process of buying it and had lived there about a year.

Firefighters using a two-pronged attack on the blaze quickly, dousing flames in just moments, but much of the home had already suffered heat damage.

Fire damage was largely confined to a single room.

El Campo Fire Marshal Larry Staff was there to examine the fire's path along with ECVFD chiefs Jimmy George Jr. and Jimmy Nielsen.

"It looks like its electrical. Going to the a/c unit in the window," Staff said.

The 110-volt window unit was on the ground, blistered and destroyed by flames.

"We'd had it on about two and a half months," Vasquez said. "It was running good."

The property is valued at $14,370, according to the Wharton County Central Appraisal District.

The call was number 262 for ECVFD this year. A total of 36 men responded.
