Ricebirds prevail in EC, BC version 101
The Ricebirds received the opening kickoff and in three plays moved the ball 12 yards against the Blackcat defense. On second and nine at the Bay City 40-yard line, El Campo decided to test Bay City's defensive backs. Quarterback Tyler Woods went back to pass and was picked off by Bay City's Fred Agu. He returned the ball to midfield and gave the Blackcats a seemingly early advantage. On the first play for the 'Cats, El Campo put big pressure on heralded quarterback Shaun Rutherford. Bobby Jack Polasek hit the quarterback hard in the backfield and forced a fumble. The Ricebirds recovered the ball and this time, were determined to score. A deep push through the Blackcat defensive line ended with a 9-yard touchdown run by El Campo fullback Anthony Terrell. Woods missed on the following extra point, but El Campo had the lead 6-0 with 5:50 remaining in the first quarter. The Ricebirds held Bay City to a punt in the next series and the 'Cats did the same for El Campo a few plays later on the 'Bird 25-yard line. There was a high snap on the Ricebird punt and the ball sailed into the end zone. Woods reacted quickly and fell on the ball for a safety to prevent any further damage on the play. Bay City scored two points, but it could have been worse and in this game, every point was crucial. The following kick from the 20 yard line led to another Bay City score. It took two plays, capped by a 41-yard touchdown pass from Rutherford to Tony Davis. The extra point was good and Bay City took the lead 9-6 with 2:21 remaining in the first quarter. El Campo's next possession resulted in a 37-yard field goal by Woods to tie the game at 9-9 with 9:51 on the clock. Bay City answered with a 35-yard field goal by Julio Gonzalez in the next series to take a 12-9 lead with 7:14 left in the first half. The 'Birds made their second field goal of the night on the next possession, this one from 34 yards out and tied the game on Woods' foot at 12-12 with 1:10 left on the clock. It took Bay City 45 seconds to take the lead again. Deep passes to C.J. Patterson and Darian Dale set up Rutherford for a 1- yard touchdown run to put the Blackcats up 18-12 at halftime. With all the scoring in the first half, one touchdown in the second half, and a stingy Ricebird defense, determined the game. An intense third quarter left Bay City still in the lead 18-12 to start the fourth. El Campo fumbled on the second play of the fourth quarter to give the Blackcats the ball on their own 17-yard line. Seven plays later, the Ricebird defense held Bay City to a fourth down and two yards on the El Campo 38-yard line. The 'Cats attempted a deep pass play only to be picked off by Ricebird defensive back Blake Korenek. The pick gave the Ricebirds the ball on their own 10-yard line and plenty of time to run. Anchored by a 40-yard burst by tailback Maverick Smith, El Campo pushed the ball to the Bay City 2-yard line. Terrell finished the drive with a touchdown to tie at 18-18, and Woods kicked the extra point to put the 'Birds in the lead 19-18 with 3:21 left in the game. El Campo's defense put great pressure on Rutherford in Bay City's next drive. Defensive end Kyle Wind had the play of the series with a sack on the speedy quarterback for a loss of seven yards. Two incomplete passes later and the Ricebirds had the ball. The Ricebirds picked up a first down, then ran the clock out on Bay City to leave with a big win in a great rivalry game.
