EL CAMPO FRESHMAN FOOTBALL REPORT

El Campo's freshman football teams took on Terry this past week with differing results.

The Red team defeated the Rangers 24-21 on Oct. 11 while the White team fell 24-14 on Oct. 12.

Freshman Red

The Ricebirds held off a surging Ranger team late in the game to ensure a 24-21 victory.

El Campo made the first mark on the scoreboard in the first quarter.

Andrew Catete ran for a 30-yard touchdown to give El Campo a 6-0 lead with 9:41 left in the first quarter.

Terry answered 5 minutes later with a 15-yard touchdown run and kicked the extra point to take a 7-6 lead over El Campo.

With one second remaining in the first quarter, the Ricebirds scored again. Chris Kerzee finished off a deep drive with a 1-yard touchdown run. The 'Birds missed on a 2-point conversion, but had the lead 12-7.

Terry scored again to take the lead in the second quarter. A 30-yard touchdown run and extra point with 6:44 left in the first half put the Rangers up 14- 12.

Another deep drive helped El Campo take the lead before halftime. Catete ran 3 yards for a touchdown with 16 seconds left in the half. The 2- point conversion missed again, but the 'Birds had an 18-14 lead.

The Ricebirds connected for another score in the fourth quarter. Kerzee hooked up with Catete on a 15-yard pass play. The extra point failed, but El Campo took a 24-21 lead over the Rangers.

Terry scored another touchdown to cut El Campo's lead to 24-21 and threatened late in the quarter with a potential game-winning drive.

Terry's push started after they came up with an interception and returned the ball close to midfield.

Down by three points, the Rangers had 3:47 left in the game to score a goahead touchdown, but El Campo's defense proved strong.

The Rangers made a nice drive, but without any time-outs remaining, time was slowly running out.

On fourth down with 4 yards to go, Terry ran a quarterback sweep to the right side and A.J. Owens came up with a game-saving tackle.

The Ricebirds were able to take a knee to finish out the game and come away with a 24-21 win.

Catete was the leading rusher on the night with 19 carries for 124 yards while Stephen Anderson ran for 75 yards on 8 carries.

Leading passers for the 'Birds were Kerzee with 15 yards and Devan Luedecke for 10 yards.

Catete led the 'Birds with 15 receiving yards while Coy Radley caught one pass for 10 yards.

El Campo's top tacklers were Radley who had 8, Rosalino Salgado, Stephen Anderson, Andrew Catete and Roly Piloto who each had 7 and Eli Wood, who made 6 tackles.

Freshman White

Terry managed a 24-14 win over El Campo with a pair of scores in the second half.

The Rangers made the first score of the night with a 2-yard touchdown run, but missed on the 2-point conversion.

El Campo responded with a deep pass play. Trey Krpec connected with Bryan Moreno for a 45-yard touchdown pass with 2:46 left in the first quarter. The extra point failed, but El Campo tied the game at 6-6.

The Ricebirds scored again in the second quarter to take the lead.

Bryan Montalvo ran 14-yards for a touchdown and Moreno followed with a run for the 2-point conversion to give El Campo a 14-6 lead.

Terry came through with a 40-yard touchdown pass with 15 second left in the first half to cut El Campo's lead to 14-12.

Two touchdowns by the Rangers in the second half sealed Terry's 24-14 win over the Ricebirds.

Montalvo was the leading rusher on the night with 11 carries for 70 yards.

Moreno led the 'Birds' receivers with 2 catches for 47 yards while Montalvo caught 2 passes for 25 yards.

Krpec passed for a total 72 yards and completed 4 of 7 passes.

Sergio Jaramillo led the defense with 12 tackles while Clayton Harkins made 8, Ryan Montalvo made 7 and Luis Trevino and Robert Marek both made 3.
