CLUB NEWS Taiton Extension Education Club Members of Taiton Extension Education Club met Oct. 11 at the VFW Hall to hear a program entitled "Disaster, what would you do?" given by Margie Brenek. President Elsie Stavinoha opened the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance to the U.S. and Texas flags. Dorothy Faas noted the pecan order was due Oct. 24. The second will be submitted Nov. 27. Grace Glaze reported on the state conference. Then Peggie Hobbins demonstrated napkin folding techniques. Each member practiced their skills. Betty Parma, Rose Marie Strnadel, Irene Nohavitza and Mary Ann Gerla served chicken dumplings for lunch. Wharton County Retired Teachers Association Members of the Wharton County Retired Teachers Association attended its fall district meeting at St. Peter's Lutheran fellowship hall in Hallettsville Wednesday, Oct. 3. Attending were unit president Henriette Jalowy, as well as Loretta Craft, Dana Riley, Kanzetta Allen, Charlscie Krivacka, Charlotte Bucek, Dorothy Twardowski, Franklin Kocian and wife Rose Kocian. District President Rose Castilow of Bay City presided. Committee members gave their reports. Representatives of the teacher retirement system updated everyone on happenings in the legislature. After the annual evaluation in November, it will be determined if TRS is sound so that retirees would get a 13th retirement check for one time only. Clara Nichols presented a program on her horses in Hallettsville. Those in attendance enjoyed refreshments after they registered and then a meal between segments of the program. Door prizes were also given. Woman's Club of El Campo Members of the Woman's Club of El Campo met Oct. 16 in the home of Mary Lou Birkner. Serving as hostesses to 12 members attending were Birkner, Dayle Aulds and Lorraine Cranek. President Dayle Aulds called the meeting to order and introduced the guest speakers from the City Development Corporation. Executive Director Chandra Spenrath and Executive Assistant Jessica Thane explained the mission of the CDC. One goal is to continue to offer opportunities for manufacturing and businesses to locate within the CDC's service area through special economic development incentives. Also, the CDC wants to retain, protect and nurture local jobs and businesses, while promoting growth in the area's existing business community. They have provided incentives to Cardell Cabinetry, New ICM and Coastal Fuels of El Campo. Patsy Korenek, who read information about identity theft, offered many ideas to help protect members. Individuals should make photocopies of items they carry in their wallet, such as their driver's license, credit cards, insurance cards, and so forth. Be sure to copy both the front and back of each item. Also, never put your home number on checks. This will make it harder for someone to know your personal information. After the programs, Judy Waligura led the Club Collect and the pledge to the flag. Gloria Petersen called roll, and read the minutes from the previous meeting. Evelyn Martin gave the treasurer's report. Catherine Lundy collected funds for Project Smile and Nancy Christenberry reported on the M.D. Anderson project. Mary Lou Birkner summarized an article about Volunteers in Action which promotes the activities of members in the Woman's Club. Two guests were present from the Edna Brackenridge Woman's Club. They explained an upcoming program and gave information on the GFWC. The next meeting will be Nov. 20 at 2 p.m. in the home of Nancy Christenberry. The speaker will be Stan Casey from LCRA, speaking about, "SAWS - What Do We Need to Know About Our Water." |
