Wendt shares nature video with Green Thumb members

Green Thumb Club members listened to two programs, the first by Barbara Naiser on the hardiness of the hybrid hibiscus plant.

According to Naiser, this plant must be watered often, however it can freeze if the temperature gets below freezing for long periods of time. She suggested covering when there is a chance of a light freeze.

Members and guests gathered at the home of Glenda Wendt on Oct. 17. Carolyn Goelzer assisted Wendt in hosting duties. Marilyn Goelzer presided and Florence Adamitis shared some humorous readings. Reports were given and dues collected.

Wendt presented a personal video she filmed of hummingbirds and Monarch butterflies in her yard. On the video was one of the many Monarch butterflies hatching out of its cocoon. She has also planted bushes that attract butterflies. She mentioned most yards will have cocoons. They turn black before hatching out the butterfly.

In addition to her nature hobbies, she shared a story and photos of an owl she and David rescued. It had fallen out of its nest. They watched as the mother raised it and dad taught it to hunt. All three owls still reside in their yard.

Following the meeting, members took a tour of the Wendts' yard. The next outing will be a field trip to Kalina Nursery Nov. 14.
