EL CAMPO FRESHMAN FOOTBALL REPORT

El Campo's freshman football teams played different opponents Oct. 18, but they both had the same outcome.

The Freshman Red team shut out Bay City 41-0 while the Freshman White team played Calhoun and won 38-8.

Freshman Red

El Campo played outstanding ball throughout the night against the Blackcats. The Ricebird running game amassed 41 points while the defense had one of its strongest games of the season for a shutout of Bay City.

The Ricebirds made the first score with 5:29 left in the first quarter. Andrew Catete ran in from five yards out and Stephen Anderson made the 2-point conversion on the ground to gave El Campo an 8-0 lead.

Less then four minutes later, the 'Birds scored another touchdown to move ahead 16-0.

Anderson ran for a 14-yard score and Catete came through with the 2- point conversion with 1:59 left in the first quarter.

A pair of touchdowns in the second quarter gave the Ricebirds high spirits in the locker room at halftime.

Catete struck again, this time from 2 yards out and Devan Luedecke kicked the extra point for the first score of the quarter.

Anderson earned his second touchdown in the game on a 15-yard run with 45 seconds left in the quarter. The extra point failed, but El Campo had a 29-0 lead at the half.

Catete scored his third touchdown to push the 'Birds' lead higher in the third quarter. He ran the ball in from the 7 with 3:52 left in the quarter to give El Campo a 35-0 lead.

The longest score of the game came from A.J. Owens. He ran 46 yards for the final score of the game with 4:20 left to play. That touchdown gave the game its final score at 41-0.

While the Ricebird offense had a great game, this one was dominated by El Campo's defense - especially the secondary.

The 'Birds held Bay City's spread passing attack to three first downs. Defensive backs Chris Kerzee, Shaquille Edwards, Coy Radley, Lazaro Miranda, Catete and Owens each played well to shut down the Blackcats and boost El Campo to 6-1 on the season and 2-0 in district play.

Catete led El Campo's rushers with 12 carries for 115 yards while Anderson ran for 51 yards on 7 carries and Owens had 1 run for 46 yards.

Kerzee made good on his only pass attempt of the night. He found Rosalino Salgado open for a 17-yard connection.

Clark Kyle led the defense with 7 tackles while Salgado made 4, Anderson, Miranda and Ethan Kinder each made 3, Catete made 2 and Mario Arismendez made 1 tackle.

Eli Wood and Catete each had one fumble recovery and Arismendez earned a sack.

Freshman White

The Ricebirds ran over Calhoun for a 38-8 win.

El Campo started the scoring in the first quarter to take an early lead.

Bryan Montalvo ran in for a 65- yard touchdown. The extra point failed and El Campo led 6-0.

Calhoun claimed the lead later in the quarter on a touchdown and 2-point conversion. It was the only time the Sandcrabs had a lead on the 'Birds.

El Campo responded with a deep drive in the second quarter. Montalvo finished it with a 4-yard touchdown and 2-point conversion to put the 'Birds back on top at the half, 14-8.

More Ricebird running came in the third quarter as Bryan Moreno broke free for a 55-yard touchdown. Trey Krpec connected with Moreno on a pass for the 2-point conversion and gave El Campo a 22-8 lead.

The next score came on a great defensive play. Moreno picked off a Sandcrab pass and returned it 55-yards for a touchdown. He ran in for the 2-point conversion to give the 'Birds a 30-8 lead.

Krpeck and Montalvo connected on a pass play for the next score. After he caught the pass, Montalvo worked around Calhoun's defense for a 70- yard touchdown. Ryan Montalvo ran in for the 2-point conversion and the Ricebirds had their final score of 38-8.

B. Montalvo was the leading rusher on the night with 15 carries for 72 yards and Moreno ran 8 tines for 65 yards.

Krpec completed 6 of 7 passes for 106 yards. B. Montalvo led all receivers with 2 catches for 78 yards and Robert Morek caught 2 passes for 22 yards.

Sergio Jaramillo led the defense with 6 tackles and Robert Lorman and B. Moreno both had 4 tackles.
