Ricebirds hope to rebound from loss

      El Campo returns home Friday to host Katy Seven Lakes and attempt to rebound from a sudden shock last week. The Ricebirds experienced their first loss of the season Friday in a tough game with Foster. Now the challenge for El Campo is to step up and take down a deceivingly good Seven Lakes team.

      El Campo's cross country teams competed at Seven Lakes High School Saturday for the district meet and several girls advanced on to this week's regional meet. Hornets in open week, resting up

      For the first time since he became a Hornet, Coach Rodney Dowell's football team is one win away from the playoffs. Friday's victory over Flatonia brings the Hornets the closest they have been in three years to clinching a spot in the post season and it could not have come at a better time.

      Louise is eagerly awaiting its first volleyball playoff match after a perfect run in district. The Lady Hornets finished 10-0 to claim the district title and a first-round bye. New antler restrictions announced

      Wharton County is one of several counties in the state that have adopted antler restriction regulations for the deer hunting season, opening Saturday. And restriction regulations are something Texas Parks and Wildlife Game Warden Scott Blackburn will be looking for this year.

Hornets advance to region
      Two members of Louise's cross country team are advancing to regionals. Nicole Roades and Jay Sulak both finished in the top 10 at district Saturday. Roades, a freshman, ran two miles in 13:45. Sulak, a junior, finished the 3-mile meet in 18:06.

      Week 9 of the Leader-News Football Contest was cluttered with four-miss ballots. Todd Mickelson, Arthur Washington, Alonzo Gonzalez, Vlasta Bartos, Richard Smajstrla, Michael Thane and Mark Freeman each missed four games forcing a look at Tiebreaker 1.

Eighth-graders split pair of great football games
      El Campo Middle School's eighth-grade football teams played in a pair of excellent matches Tuesday against Briscoe. The Red team took revenge over an earlier loss to Briscoe while the white team lost in the last seconds of an incredible game.
