Pioneers take north zone title

The Pioneers A repeated as North Zone Champions this year with a win over Schulenburg St. Rose Oct. 25.

Monday, St. Philip fell to Victoria Nazareth Academy in two games for a shot at the district title. More information from that match will be available in Wednesday's edition of the Leader-News.

Though the A team claimed top prize in the North with a great win, the B and C teams faced St. Rose and gave them a good run as well.

St. Philip A

The Pioneers claimed the North Zone Championship with a 2-game win over St. Rose.

St. Philip had several girls score en route to a sweep with wins of 25-13 and 25-23.

Rebecca Korenek led the Pioneers with 12 points. Kirby Quintero scored 6 points, Shelby Snyder and Lauren Gregurek both scored 5, Kathryn Hancock scored 2 and Sally Johnson scored 1 point.

Korenek served for a teamhigh 7 aces while Snyder served 5 and Quintero and Hancock both served 1 ace.

Johnson led St. Philip with 14 spikes. Korenek hit 11 and Hancock hit 2 spikes in the match.

St. Philip B

The Pioneers lost to St. Rose in a difficult match with scores of 25- 15 and 25-17.

Taylor Fuechec, Kacy Kne- sek and Alexis Crowell each scored 2 points in the match while Kari Wilkins, Rebecca Dornak, Allison Fucik and Michaela Thornton each scored 1 point.

St. Philip C

The Pioneers came close to a victory in a great match. St. Rose barely pulled away with a 2-0 win, defeating St. Philip 25-23 and 27-25.

Kaitlyn Davlin led the Pioneers with 7 points. Audrey Anderson scored 5 points, Jessica Gaines scored 4, Lindsey Jones scored 2 and Jennie Ritter scored 1 point.

St. Philip v St. Michael

Before playing for the North Zone Championship, St. Philip faced Weimar St. Michael Oct. 22. The A team was the only team to get a win, but the B team played a nice match as well.

St. Philip A

The Pioneers held off a surging St. Michael team to earn a win in two games with scores of 25-19 and 25-23.

Johnson and Gregurek led the Pioneers with 6 points while Hancock scored 4, Korenek scored 3 and Amber Kresta and Quintero both scored 2 points.

St. Philip B

St. Michael escaped with a close win over St. Philip. The Pioneers pushed their opponent to extra points in the first game but lost 26-24. St. Michael came back and won game two 25-14.

Wilkins scored a team-high 10 points while Dornak scored 5, Fucik scored 2 and Sara Krenek, Brooke Wallace and Shelby Stary each scored 1 point.
