LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Putting rumors to rest

Editor, the Leader-News:

As of Oct. 31, Patrick Hlavaty resigned from Commercial State Bank to pursue a job in the fire-fighting protection industry. Contrary to any rumors that may be circulating, his departure from the bank was routine and orderly.

We wish Patrick success in his new endeavor.

LCRA plans concern us all

Editor, the Leader-News:

Tuesday Oct. 30, 2007 there was an LCRA meeting. Very informative, on what they wanted you to know. Where was everyone?

No news coverage, and no one representing the people of Wharton County.

The Matagorda County Judge attended this meeting noting he was representing the 40,000 people of Matagorda County. He had many concerns about this project, which we all should have, since it will be sending a large amount of our water to San Antonio for up to 50 years or more.

There will be a pipeline (7-8 feet in diameter, 5 feet under the ground) built though our county, a deep retention pond built in Pierce Estate with up to 80 foot walls, and possibly over 100 large deep water wells drilled to support irrigation to rice farmers.

Which seems funny, since rice farming has declined tremendously in this state.

Where is this water going to go? Just takes one law passed in Austin and our ground water can be exported across county lines. Also, many conservation ponds will be built to hold water from these deep-water wells. These ponds can be anywhere from 40 to 120 acres is size.

We need to start pulling together, or life as we know it will be gone.

Louise schools glad for help

Editor, the Leader-News:

Louise ISD would like to thank its community members for supporting our efforts during Red Ribbon Week. The annual DARE parade and pep rally were a huge success! The students had a great time spreading the drug-free message through town. Thank you to all who participated - from parents, educators, students, clubs and business owners, to community members and all!
