Zohe Wenglar of Katy, 11- year-old daughter of Dezda Hyer and Ty Wenglar, participated in the senior division of the Iron Kids Triathlon Series in Austin Sunday, Oct. 28, finishing in 1 hour and 6 minutes.
Swimming, biking and running combine in an exciting race that promotes self confidence, physical fitness and a positive attitude. In the senior division, ages 11-14, Wenglar competed three events: 200 meter swim; cycle course of 6.2 miles; and 1.2-mile run.
The Sara Lee IronKids Triathlon Series started in 1985 and since then more than 40,000 kids have participated.
Doug Friman was the first 10-and-under junior division winner in 1985 and is still racing 20 years later. Nick Radkewich won the senior division 11-14 in that same inaugural season with a 13-year-old from Plano named Lance Armstrong coming in a close second.
The competition is divided between boys and girls, and then by age. There are relay team competitions, too.
Wenglar is the granddaughter of Ernest and Dellinda Hyer, and great-granddaughter of Marie Meek and Totsie Wenglar, all of El Campo.
