St. Philip Pioneers finish season in tough match

St. Philip's A volleyball team finished its season Oct. 29 with a loss to Victoria Nazareth Academy at the district championship.

The Pioneers made a great push to claim the North Zone title four days earlier with a dominant win over Schulenburg St. Rose. Nazareth Academy proved to be a tough opponent for the Pioneers as they fell in two wellplayed games.

Nazareth Academy claimed the first game 25-12 despite a huge 9 spikes by Rebecca Korenek.

The second game was tightly contested and went into extra points. St. Philip pushed Nazareth Academy, but fell only 2 points shy of the win.

Shelby Snyder led the Pioneers with 7 points, including 1 ace in the game, but Nazareth Academy defeated the Pioneers 28-26.

Snyder led the Pioneers in scoring with 7 total points in the match. Sally Johnson and Kirby Quintero both scored 2 and Amber Kresta, Lauren Gregurek and Kathryn Hancock each scored 1 point.

Johnson, Snyder, Quintero and Korenek each had 1 ace on the night.

Korenek led the team with 13 total spikes while Johnson had 5 spikes.

The Pioneers finished the season with an 11-4 overall record including a 7-1 zone record.
