Lady 'Birds start season with win The Lady 'Birds started off the new basketball season with a win Tuesday. The team traveled to Clute to face Brazoswood and held off the Lady Bucs late in the game for a 40-38 first-game victory. Brazoswood made a good start early on to take a 19-16 lead into halftime. The Lady 'Birds stepped up their defensive play in the third quarter and forced a few turnovers with their press. Turnovers turned into quick baskets and El Campo outscored the Lady Bucs 13-6 in the third quarter to take a 29-25 lead with one quarter left to play. Brazoswood worked hard in the fourth quarter to challenge the Lady 'Birds. El Campo struggled to score in the last two minutes of the game and made only one of six free throws during the stretch. El Campo played close with Brazoswood in the last seconds of the match and eventually came away with a close 40-38 win to start the year 1-0. Shae Solomon led the team in scoring with 15 points while Ebonee Spencer scored 12, Ashley Brooks scored 5, Ashley Thomas and Angel Brooks both scored 3 and Kela Johnson scored 2 points. Angel Brooks led the defense with 6 steals. Spencer stole 4 balls, Ashley Brooks stole 3, Kela Johnson and Thomas both stole 2 and Edna Johnson and Chelsi Robinson both made 1 steal. Spencer made a team-high 11 rebounds while Ashley Brooks made 7, Angel Brooks made 5, Thomas made 4, Solomon made 3 and Kela Johnson made 2 rebounds. Thomas and Ashley Brooks both made 2 assists on the night while Spencer, Edna Johnson and Angel Brooks each made 1 assist. The Lady 'Birds will make their home debut Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. against Yoakum. |
