Solemn Tribute

Contributed Photo Playing "Taps" on recorders during the Veterans Day program at Northside Elementary are (l-r) Leticia Vazquez, Joel Hernandez, Blake Krpec and Gabby Martinez. The program included several patriotic numbers by fourth and fifth grade students. In attendance and honored were several retired servicemen. Taps, often played on the bugle or trumpet, was composed by the Union Army Brig. Gen. Daniel Butterfield, an American Civil War general. The tune, sometimes known as "Butterfield's Lullaby" or by the lyrics of the second verse: "Day is Done," is played at many military funerals.
