Louise defense burns Badgers for shutout
Up next for the streaking Hornets is D'Hanis. Louise will take on the Cowboys at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Matador Stadium in Seguin. The Hornets made a great defensive stand against Bruni at Rockport to clinch a second-round appearance with a shutout. Both the Hornets and Badgers had trouble moving the ball against stout defenses. Louise's defense made the difference in the game with five turnovers in key situations while the offense managed two scores. The first few drives of the game gave indication for what exactly what type of match was about to unfold. It was a great defensive battle. The Hornets started the game on their own 26-yard line and anchored by a 48-yard run by Antwon Parson, Louise drove deep into Badger territory.
The Badgers' following drive lasted only five plays and ended up in a fumble. Chris Hicks fell on the loose ball to give the Hornets possession. Hicks was in on three of the Hornets' five forced turnovers. In the second quarter, Matthew Blumrick striped a Badger runner to give Louise its fourth possession of the game on the Bruni 37-yard line. After Bulmrick's play, the Hornets finally broke through with a score. With 1:59 left in the first half, Louise made a pair of plays for 16 yards and Kyle Lawson ran on the third play to put the ball on the 2-yard line. A fumble and false start put the Hornets back to Bruni's 12-yard line, but that was no problem for Louise. The Hornets scored on the next play. With 15 seconds left before the half and the Badger defense looking for a pass, Head Coach Rodney Dowell made a gutsy call - he decided to run the ball. The handoff went to Parson, who found plenty of space in front of him. He cut back against the Badger defense and with one man left to guard him, shook by him for the touchdown. Louise lined up in the swinging gate formation on the next play and caught Bruni by surprise. A napping Badger defense fell victim to a 2-point conversion run by Parson to put the Hornets ahead 8-0 at the half. Two fumbles by the Badgers in the third quarter prevented a beats Bruni Bruni score and took a lot of time off of the game clock while the Hornets maintained their lead. Later in the fourth quarter, Louise followed a Bruni punt with the second score of the game. The Hornets only had to move 54 yards on the next drive and it was Parson again who made the big play. On third and four from the Bruni 48, Hajovsky took the snap and looked to pass. He caught Parson open up the sideline, who juked his way for 37 yards to the Bruni 11. Eventually Hajovsky finished the drive with a 4-yard touchdown run. Louise bobbled an extra point snap, but the Hornets had a 14-0 lead. A pair of great defensive stops gave the Hornets the ball back to run out the clock. The Hornets claimed the game 14-0. |
