CDC backs annexation

The board of the City Development Corp. of El Campo made it official: It supports the city's planned annexation.

CDC directors passed a resolution in support of the upcoming annexation during a special called meeting Monday.

"It was to let City Council know that the CDC feels that the designated areas would be an asset to the tax base," CDC Executive Director Chandra Spenrath said. "Annexation helps the CDC with its mission because those businesses pay sales tax and that increases our leverage to bring in prospects to our community, which creates jobs."

In a 4-3 vote Nov. 27, with representatives Robert Boone, Anthony Collins and Gloria Harris against, City Council tentatively approved its revised annexation plans minus the Sunset Terrace neighborhood on FM 2765.

A formal vote on the issue is expected during the upcoming Tuesday, Dec. 11 City Council session. If approved then, all annexed areas become a part of the city of El Campo Jan. 1 and subject to taxation as of that date.

The CDC is a city-created entity funded by a quarter cent of the city's sales tax dollars to promote economic development.
