Hornets earn several all-district positions
The Hornets finished a great 2007 season with an 8-3 record and an appearance in the second round of the playoffs, a feat which was reflected in voting for the alldistrict teams. First team offensive honors went to five Hornets. Juniors Mathew Blumrick, Danny Estrada and Javier Padron all received the nod for excellent blocking throughout the year. Blumrick helped lead the way for Louise's ground game, making crucial blocks that opened holes for Hornets runners to burst through. Estrada was a constant force at center for the Hornets and proved to be a reliable leader. Padron was named as first team tight end. In Louise's offense, the tight end position is primarily used for blocking. Though Padron caught a few passes, it was his strength as a run blocker that earned the selection. He helped Louise's backs turn the corner for outside yardage. The three leaders of the offensive line helped the Hornets' running game amass more than 2,046 yards on the season.
Lawson, fullback for the Hornets, made his way on Louise's varsity team last season as a sophomore and finished as the district's top rusher with 1,001 yards. This year as a junior, Lawson improved his running game and held on to the district's top position. He finished the regular season with 1,084 yards on 173 carries and averaged 6.27 yards every time he touched the ball. Lawson also scored 15 total touchdowns and was in on two 2-point conversions to total 94 points for the Hornets on the year. Parson may have been the Hornets' surprise of the season. As a junior, he was productive in 2006, but Parson exploded for Louise his senior year. The running back brought gamebreaking speed on the field every time he touched the ball. Opponents knew it was only a matter of time before he broke free for a long run. Parson finished the season with 678 yards on 70 carries and averaged 9.69 yards per run. His longest run of the year went for 85 yards and he scored nine touchdowns. The speedster was also a threat in returning kicks. In the regular season, he had eight returns for 184 yards and averaged 23 yards per return. Including the post season, he returned two kicks for touch- downs. Louise earned five firstteam defensive honors. Cory Hajovsky, Chris Hicks, Desmond Pulliam, Parson and Blumrick each earned a spot on the district's first team. Hajovsky was touted early in the year as the leader of the defense. After taking over quarterbacking duties, the senior proved to be a great player on both sides of the ball as his defensive skills never diminished. He finished the season at safety with 38 and six interceptions. Hicks, a junior defensive back, led the Hornets in interceptions with an outstanding season. He showed great leaping ability and good hands in snagging seven passes. Hicks also made 56 tackles and recovered three fumbles on the year. Pulliam stepped up to become a district leader in his first year of high school. As a freshman, Louise's outside linebacker punished opposing offenses with 67 tackles, two sacks and three fumble recoveries. Blumrick had possibly the best defensive season of any Hornet. He was a constant force in stopping the run game and finished the year with 143 tackles and five forced fumbles. Parson's speed proved useful on defense as well as offense. As a defensive tackle, he made his way into the backfield frequently for a team-high nine sacks. Parson also had three fumble recoveries and 47 tackles on the year. Louise earned four positions on both the second team offense and second team defense. Senior Wesley Branscum was named as receiver and Pulliam was named fullback. Official stats were not available for them. Juniors Josh Estrada and Andrew Cardenas made two other selections for the Hornets front line. Estrada was named guard and Cardenas made tackle. Defensively, senior Jonathan DeLeon received second-team tackle honors. He finished the year with five sacks and 74 total tackles. Joining DeLeon on second team are Clint Barrera, Zack Lawson and Padron. Barrera helped the Hornets defense in his sophomore season with 37 tackles, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery from the inside linebacker position. Lawson, a sophomore defensive end, made 16 tackles on the year. Padron made nine tackles at the defensive tackle position. Offensive honorable mention went to Zane Soliz, P.J. Polk and Hajovsky. Polk and Soliz were members of the offensive line while Hajovsky completed 20 of 70 passes for 292 yards and 5 touchdowns as quarterback. Defensive honorable mention went to Michael Jacinto, Branscum, Estrada and Polk. Jacinto made 20 tackles and forced one fumble, Branscum made 29 tackles and two interceptions, Polk made three sacks and 16 tackles and Estrada made six tackles and force two fumbles. Note: Statistics are based on regular season games and do not include the playoffs. District 24-4A and the El Campo Ricebird's alldistrict selections will be published after the Lamar Consolidated Mustangs are eliminated from playoff contention.
