Tx. Czech Heritage calendars available
      The Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center of La Grange publishes an annual calendar, not only as a fund-raiser, but also to fulfill its primary goal to preserve and promote Czech heritage. Because these calendars are historically significant, they have become very popular collectors' items.

Jingle Bell Walkers
      Seven individuals from El Campo participated in the Jingle Bell Run and Walk Sunday, Dec. 9 in Houston. The group walked the 3-mile portion of the race benefiting the Houston Downtown YMCA's Partner's Campaign which provides scholarship dollars for people in need of YMCA programs.

Boots and Bridle 4-H in need of sponsors for show
      The Wharton County Boots and Bridle 4-H Club is hosting an open horse show Saturday, Jan. 26 at the Wharton County Youth Fair Arena. Hanslik's contribution to the Texas Czech Center announced
      The philanthropic contributions of Adolph Hanslik continue with the announcement of a $100,000 matching donation to the Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center's capital campaign for construction of a new library museum archives building.

      Holly Sohrt, bride-elect of Dustin Kana, was honored with a Christmas ornament party from 4-6 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 8 at the home of the hostess, Chris Kana, stepmother of the future groom. In keeping with the holiday theme, Christmas decorations were placed throughout the home.

Baby shower honors Mersmann
      Amie Mersmann, wife of Ryan Mersmann, was given a baby shower Saturday afternoon at the home of Brenda Cerny of Sealy, Ryan's godmother and aunt. Hostesses were Brenda Cerny, Sara Cerny and Amy Mersmann- Martinez. A sign that read "It's a Boy" was placed on the front door.

DAR recalls Pearl Harbor
      Members of Comfort Wood Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, attended a luncheon Friday, Dec. 7 at the Pat-A-Cake on the Square in Wharton. The pineapple bell, this year's theme, was centered on the table. The purpose of the luncheon was to commemorate Pearl Harbor Day.

      SPJST Lodge 30 Taiton youth club members met Sunday at the Taiton Community Center in conjunction with the lodge's annual Christmas social. The meeting was called to order at 11 a.m. by the president, Kenna Bubela. Members completed their December Vestnik projects.

Santa & Czech Singers visit nursing home
      The Czech Catholic Home held their annual Christmas party for residents Sunday, Dec. 9. Entertainment featured the Czech Singers directed by Frank Milder. Vocalists were Gladys Rod, Dorothy Srubar, Leon Kristynik, Hattie Kristynik, Mickey Howard, Margie Merta, Ella Merta and Charlie Merta.

Tickets on sale for Big Joe Polka Fest
      The Big Joe Polka Fest returns to the Big Red Barn in Carmine which is located between La Grange and Brenham in February. Despite temperatures in the 30s, polka fans filled the building at the first show in 2005. This year's event will be held Feb. 21-24.
