DAR recalls Pearl Harbor Members of Comfort Wood Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, attended a luncheon Friday, Dec. 7 at the Pat-A-Cake on the Square in Wharton. The pineapple bell, this year's theme, was centered on the table. The purpose of the luncheon was to commemorate Pearl Harbor Day. A program was given by Hazel Foltyn, regent. Each lady was given a sheet entitled "Aftermath of the Bombing." Members were reminded of approximately 100 Navy ships present in the harbor. Eight battleships were damaged and five were sunk. Eleven smaller ships, including cruisers and destroyers, were also badly damaged. Among those killed were 2,335 servicemen and 68 civilians. The wounded included 1,178 people. The USS Arizona was dealt the worst blow of the attack. A 1,700-pound bomb struck it and the ammunition on board exploded killing 1,177 servicemen. A memorial spanning the sunken remains of the Arizona is dedicated to the memory of all those lost in the bombings. A discussion followed by those who remembered that fateful day. Members also celebrated Christmas and each was given a poem entitled "The Night Before Christmas" as a memento. Joy Jones Wind was introduced as the most recent member to join the group. |
