Lady 'Birds take second in Brookshire
Tournament host Royal met El Campo in the title game and ended the Lady 'Birds run with only their second loss of the season. At 11-2 on the year, El Campo finished the Brookshire Tournament in second place. Lady 'Birds 51, Manvel 33 El Campo's first game came with an easy win over Manvel. An extra effort in the rebounding game has helped the Lady 'Birds in every game this season. If the Lady 'Birds ever doubt that second chances pay off, they can look to this game for assurance. The top two rebounders, Ebonee Spencer and Angel Brooks, were also El Campo's top two scorers. The entire team combined for 40 total rebounds that night. Spencer finished with eight rebounds and 21 points while Brooks made 12 rebounds and scored 13 points on the night. The Lady 'Birds attacked the Mavericks early with their quick offense and ran up an 11-5 lead after the first quarter. El Campo pushed Manvel further in the second quarter to take a big lead at the half. A 15-5 quarter put the Lady 'Birds up 26-10 at halftime and almost secured the win. The third quarter went to El Campo 14-7 to make the score 40-17 with only one quarter left to play. Though the Lady 'Birds did not need another point for the win, they still scored 11 to finish with a 51-33 win and advance to play the Wheatley Wildcats. Lady 'Birds 58, Wheatley 48 Round two of the Brookshire Tournament provided a bit more of a challenge for the Ladies, but by halftime, El Campo proved to be the stronger team. Wheatley challenged the Lady 'Birds in the first quarter and trailed El Campo 8-7. El Campo surged in the second quarter to outscore Wheatley 25-11 and took a 33- 18 lead into the locker room at halftime. Wheatley outscored El Campo in the third and fourth quarters, 14-10 and 16-15, but it was not enough to shake the Lady 'Birds. El Campo advanced to the championship round with a 58-48 final score. The difference in this game came from the free-throw line. The Lady 'Birds went to the line 31 times and made 20 of their shots for a 65 percent rate. Ashley Brooks led El Campo from the line in making 7 of 9 attempts. Royal 40, Lady 'Birds 34 El Campo made a great start to the title game, but fell in the end to a tough Royal team. Rebounding was the Ladies' strength in earlier games, but this one turned out differently. Though the team ended up with 31 total boards, they ran into another squad with rebounding power. Royal muscled around the Lady 'Birds for five baskets on offensive rebounds in El Campo's struggle to control the boards. Angel Brooks led the Lady 'Birds with 6 points in the first quarter and helped El Campo to a 12-11 lead. The second quarter went to El Campo 6-5 to put the Lady 'Birds ahead 18-16 at halftime. After time in the locker room to regroup, Royal came out like a changed team. They Falcons controlled El Campo in the third quarter to take a 30-28 lead with one quarter remaining to play. The Lady 'Birds had offensive struggles in the final quarter. Seven turnovers in the quarter limited El Campo to only seven field goal attempts. In turn, the Lady 'Birds' scoring was down. Only Shae Solomon and Ashley Thomas were able to connect on baskets. The other two points came from Angel Brooks free throws. El Campo was outscored 10-6 to end the game with a 40-34 final score.
