Briscoe holds up EC eighth graders

El Campo's eighth-grade boys basketball teams fell in a pair of difficult matches Thursday.

The Ricebirds traveled to Richmond to take on Briscoe Junior High and after four hard quarters, lost both games.

8th Grade Red

El Campo trailed slightly after one quarter of play 18-15, but rebounded in the second quarter to tie the game at 23-23 at halftime.

The 'Birds rallied to take the lead in the third quarter after a commanding period. El Campo outscored Briscoe 12-5 to take a 35-28 with one quarter left to play.

Briscoe's defense proved to be too much for the Ricebirds in the fourth quarter. El Campo managed 5 points against the stingy defense, but Briscoe tallied 11 for a narrow 43-40 win over the 'Birds. It was El Campo's first loss of the year.

Devontay Allen and Tanner Schoener both led the 'Birds with 9 points. Castrong Richardson scored 5 points, Josh Bishop and Bryan Sparks both scored 4 and Cullen Schoener, Chris Espinoza

and Devin Parks each scored 3 points.

El Campo's strong rebounding kept them in the game until the very end. Sparks led the team with 6 boards while Parks made 4, Richardson made 3,

Anthony Aguilar and Bishop both made 2 and Allen and Schoener both made 1 rebound.

8th Grade White

The Ricebirds ran into a strong defense and were held to single-digit scoring in each quarter. Though they gave a great effort, the 'Birds fell to Briscoe 54-18.

Ryan Reyna and Datrel North both led El Campo in scoring with 5 points while Derik Yackel and Logan Howard both scored 3 and Quinton Kubala scored 2 points.
