24-4A All-District teams named, El Campo earns 24 total honors
By KRIS BAGLEY sports@leader-news.com

LANDON APPLING
Now that Lamar Consolidated's post-season run is finally over, the 24-4A's All-District Football teams are official.

The district-champion Mustangs pushed farther than any other team in the Division I bracket to claim the state championship. Lamar Consolidated defeated Copperas Cove 20-14 Saturday for the title.

Though the voting occurred before the playoffs began, results were held until every 24-4A team finished their season.

As it should be, the state champions received several all-district honors, including running back Jacquizz Rodgers as the overall MVP, but the Ricebirds took their share with one individual award and 23 team awards.

Landon Appling led El Campo's honors, winning co-defensive newcomer of the year.

The sophomore linebacker finished the year with 45 tackles including one for a loss, one forced fumble, two fumble recoveries, five knocked-down passes and one interception.

Appling was a key member of the district's best defensive unit.

At the regular season's completion, the Ricebirds were ranked first of six teams in overall defense. El Campo held opponents to only 1,082 yards rushing and 1,091 yards passing, for a district-leading 2,173 total yards and 241.4 yards-per-game average.

The 'Birds' success was reflected in the first-team defensive selections. El Campo came away with six on the team. Bay City was the only school to come close to the Ricebirds with three selections.

Chris Raun, Bryan Skow, Bryce Skow, Bobby Jack Polasek, Thad Deiss and Tyler Woods all earned first-team honors.

Bryan Skow was named as an inside linebacker. The junior led El Campo with 101 tackles including a teamhigh 16 for a loss and led with four sacks. He also recovered one fumble, knocked down three passes and made one interception.

Polasek was named as an outside linebacker. He finished his senior season with 45 tackles including 10 for a loss, one sack, three forced fumbles, knocked down one pass, and picked off an interception and returned it for a touchdown.

Deiss made the team's secondary. As a senior, he finished with 91 total tackles and had one for a loss. He knocked down six passes, picked off one and forced one fumble.

Bryce Skow was named to the defensive line. He made 60 tackles including 13 for a loss, two sacks, forced one fumble and recovered one fumble in his senior year.

Raun made one of the two defensive end spots. As a senior, he made 23 tackles including two for a loss, one sack, forced one fumble and recovered a fumble.

Woods was named as the first-team punter. He averaged 40.4 yards per kick in his senior year.

Seniors Anthony Terrell, and Bryce Skow join with juniors Chase Bullard and Troy Lawson as members of the offensive first team.

Bullard, named center, Lawson, named as a lineman, and Skow, one of two tight ends, all led the Ricebirds running attack with great blocks up front.

The trio helped push the 'Birds to 3,062 total rushing yards and 610 passing yards this season.

Terrell, El Campo's fullback, was named one of three district running backs. He carried the ball 232 times for the Ricebirds and earned 1,768 yards and 23 touchdowns.

Blake Korenek was named to the district's second team defense.

The senior defensive back knocked down four passes and led the 'Birds with two interceptions. Korenek also made 40 tackles including two for a loss and recovered two fumbles.

Seniors Tyler Woods and Junior Tompkins and junior Maverick Smith were all named to the district's second offensive team.

Tompkins, named as an offensive lineman, was a big part in El Campo's offensive attack.

Smith, the Ricebirds' running back, finished the regular season with 796 yards on 123 carries. He averaged 6.47 yards every time he carried the ball and scored four rushing touchdowns.

Woods was named as the team's kicker. He finished the year with six field goals and 22 extra points. By the regular season's end, Woods was the sixth leading scorer in the district.

Honorable mention went to seniors Larry Williams, Kris Escobar, Russ Graves, Derek Martinez, Matt Janke, juniors Parker Herrmann, Josh Garcia and sophomore Jac Axel.
