LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Keinarth not a Navy man

Editor, the Leader-News:

I am writing to say I enjoyed the article Jerry Aulds wrote Dec. 15 about local service men, including my husband, Art Keinarth, and also I am writing to make a correction in regards to Art being present for the signing of the peace by Gen. (Douglas) MacArthur on the Missouri.

Art was never a sailor! He was on the Missouri as a member of MacArthur's honor guard. He was in the Infantry Parachute Co., never the Navy. His unit went into Japan ahead of MacArthur, marching in to Tokyo. He was the second American going in. He said they were due to "jump into Tokyo," but due to the atom bomb, they marched in ahead of the general, peacefully, for which they were grateful.

Thank you for remembering these men and our current veterans and service men and women. They deserve our respect and thanks.

Sincerely, Bernice Keinarth

Parade makes resident proud

Editor, the Leader-News:

My family and friends LOVE our Christmas parade! I was unable to attend this year, but heard I missed a good show.

There was a lady from out of town who attended our parade for the first time this year. She said she was amazed at our parade. She told another out of town resident that next year they need to go to El Campo and watch the parade.

She said it is so much better than other parades in the area and having it at night is all the more exciting. She was amazed at the number of actual floats and the detail and time spent on them. She was so excited and happy she attended and said they will be there next year too.

It made me feel proud to live here. I didn't realize how lucky we are to have the amount of residents attend and businesses and clubs participate. We take pride in our town and come together once a year for our wonderful parade.
