Increases in public intoxication and driving while intoxicated arrests are a holiday norm, but Wharton County hasn't had a Christmas or New Year's auto fatality this decade, and ongoing enforcement crackdowns are designed to keep anyone from becoming a sad statistic. Law enforcers from local and state agencies are targeting speeders, drunken drivers and seat belt violators from before Christmas until the first of the year, so that scenes like the one above, from a major accident on U.S. 59, won't be repeated.
