New Year - New Baby
Parents & brothers welcome 'new' baby girl
By QUALA MATOCHA lifestyle@leader-news.com
Ringing in the new year had a whole new meaning for parents Melissa Hoelscher and Julian Torres. Celebrating at their home in Garwood on Monday, Dec. 31, Melissa went into labor around midnight.

Ava Torres Melissa Hoelscher and Julian Torres of Garwood announce the birth of their third child, a daughter named Ava Marina Torres. The baby was born at 6:45 a.m., Jan. 1, 2008 at Columbus Community Hospital in Columbus, weighing 6 pounds, 1 ounce and measuring 19 1/2 inches long. She is welcomed home by three brothers: Adrian, age 11; Philip, age 9; and Shawn, age 8. Maternal grandparents are Michael and Karen Hoelscher of Garwood and Susan Hoelscher of Houston. Great-grandparents are Gladys Blumrick of El Campo and Martha Stancik Homeier of Schulenberg.
"I was having pains and I knew it was time," she said.

What transpired from the couple's New Year's Eve celebration into the early morning hours was unexpected, because she wasn't due until Tuesday, Jan. 8. Scheduled for an ultrasound with her doctor this past Wednesday, mom, dad and new baby were home by then.

Entering into this world from a breech position, buttocks first, Ava Marina Torres was born at 6:45 a.m., Jan. 1, 2008 at the Columbus Community Hospital, weighing 6 pounds, 1 ounce and measuring 19 1/2 inches in length.

While each and every delivery is unique with its own risks and situations, this one will be recalled by several family members present in the same room to experience Ava's birth.

Melissa, accompanied by Julian and his sister, Jovita Carter, was admitted to the ER and quickly put into a room. Other family arrived shortly after that including her sisters Shelly Schulz and Lisa Reyes and mom Susan Hoelscher. The doctor was advised when Melissa reached 8 cmm.

While Melissa recalls most of the details of the delivery despite pain medications she received, her sister Shelly remembers every detail.

First, Ava was breech. That was only discovered after the nurse checked to see how far she had dilated.

"The placenta came first," Shelly said. "The nurse looked at Lisa and said, 'Get me some help in here!' and Lisa pulled the code blue button."

Nurses poured into the room- still no doctor.

At one point Melissa was advised to stop pushing. "They told me to wait, but I had to push," she said.

Assisting her sister during this phase of the delivery, Shelly said Melissa left some definite marks on her arm from a tightened grip.

"She was flat on the bed with no stirrups to deliver," Shelly added. "My mom couldn't take it, she stayed in the room but stood by the door. And my 1 1/2-year-old nephew was asleep in the corner of the room." And Julian stood at the foot of the bed ready to deliver the baby himself if no one else did.

"By the time it was said and done, there were about 30 people in that room," Shelly said. "Everyone was crying."

Secondly, Melissa's heart rate skyrocketed into the 180s and her blood pressure was rising.

"I was worried about her and how high her heart rate and blood pressure were," Shelly said.

And lastly, her doctor had not arrived, the nurse on duty was about to go off-duty and she delivered the baby about 10-15 minutes before the doctor arrived.

All-in-all, the experience was hectic, yet memorable.

Melissa chose Ava's first name after scouring through some books of babies names. Her middle name, Marina, was created from the name Marianna, which both parents liked but wanted to be unique. Ava, who has black hair and dark eyes, was welcomed home by her three brothers ranging in ages from 8 to 11: Adrian, Philip and Shawn.

Melissa says Ava's first day home with her family was spent quietly.

"She has been sleeping a lot," she said. "Her brothers have been holding her and she is tired from them playing with her."

It definitely turned out to be a Happy New Year for the Hoelscher-Torres family who had two reasons to celebrate.

Welcome home Ava and Happy New Year!
