On the eve of opening district competition, El Campo's girls basketball team claimed an easy win over the Boling Lady Bulldogs.

The Lady 'Birds' 75-27 win Thursday night came in dominating fashion and ended the pre-district season on a positive note. El Campo brings a 173 record and a lot of confidence to District 24-4A play.

Though Thursday's game lacked a challenge, it showed opponents what can happen when they face a unified Lady 'Bird squad. El Campo made 24 steals and 34 rebounds in route to their easy win.

Head Coach Noma Kremling said the large lead El Campo took early in the game led to a few mistakes, which is normal when it takes a little effort for a win.

"Unfortunately, when you beat somebody by 40 points, that really wasn't much of a challenge for the night and sometimes, you get into sloppy habits," Kremling said. "We've had quite a few games where teams were just not quite on the same competitive level that we were. Unfortunately, you're going to have those nights. You have to just simply find a way to take care of it and to try to get a little better."

The Lady 'Birds started district play by hosting Seven Lakes last night. Kremling said after the Boling game, there should be no more easy wins for the rest of the season.

"Hopefully (Friday) night, when we face Seven Lakes and Tuesday against Lamar and the following Friday against Terry, we're not going to have those bad habits that we got away with tonight," she said. "I don't think anybody in district is going to be unprepared. It's going to be competitive all the way through, I think.

"Hopefully, being 17-3, we are full of confidence and full of the belief that we can take care of our business. Tomorrow night is a new challenge and next Tuesday is a new challenge. Every time we step on the court, it's a new challenge and it doesn't matter how good our record is."

The Lady 'Birds have had a relatively easy time against teams so far this season. Though it may seem that many of their wins have come against teams of Boling's caliber, Kremling said she disagrees and pointed to several teams that provided her team a challenge.

"Victoria Memorial, Wheatley, Royal and Wharton did a good job themselves," she said. "A lot of times, it's just our outlook and our attitude on the game that helps us or hurts us. I think there were some teams that we played that are as good as our district opponents. It's just whether or not we can put it together on the next Friday and Tuesday nights."

This Lady 'Bird team seems to be reaching its potential, which Kremling said makes the season fun.

"I always enjoy being around these ladies and I have a great time any time we are doing a good job and we may not win, but if we're doing the very best that we can," she said. "I think that when we do the best that we can, most of the time, we're going to come out winning because they have a lot of talent. It's not always just about winning that makes it fun for me, it's about whether or not they're reaching their potential."

The Lady 'Birds have a slight home-court advantage in the first half of district competition. Three of their five games are at home. When the second half begins Jan. 22 at Katy, the ladies will have only two more games in El Campo.

Kremling said she expects a tough showing in the district, but said that she thinks her team should compete well.

"I think that all six teams in district can be very competitive," Kremling said. "Nobody is going to blow anybody off the court. We just have to take it one possession at a time and know that we're not going to have a 40-point lead. Everything we do is going to be critical, so we can't have any bad habits following us along. We're just going to have to come to play every night."
