As law enforcement and rescue officials had hoped, rescuers did not have to race to fatality accidents in Wharton County over the Christmas/New Year's holiday weekends, although a pedestrian was killed in Wharton on Dec. 21. Wharton County hasn't had a Christmas or New Year's weekend auto fatality this decade, and law enforcers cracked down on speeders and intoxicated drivers during both holidays this year. The chance of getting a DWI or traffic citation nearly doubled during the holidays, the Texas Department of Public Safety said.
