Charlie Merta surprised with 75th birthday party

A surprise party was thrown for Charlie Merta's 75th birthday Sunday with many family and friends in attendance.

The party was held at Michael and Rachel Kasper's home at lunch time.

The room was decorated with many pictures from Charlie's life and videos of his retirement played throughout the afternoon. Balloons and streamers festooned the area and cardboard musical notes were scattered throughout the room.

Charlie has played the accordion in a band for more years than a person can count and is well known to the local polka lovers. As guests enjoyed Charlie's favorite style of music, they visited and enjoyed a meal of stew and soup.

Approximately 71 guests came to reminisce and create new memories with Charlie and his family.

Charlie's wife of 50 years, Ella, coordinated the party with the help of family and friends. Chris Merta, Betty Holub, Margie, Carl and Don Merta are the children of Charles and Ella. Charlie is one of 12 children born to Vaclav and Ludmilla Merta and grew up in Taiton. His sister Elizabeth Kacal and husband Ray, and brother Jerome Merta came to help Charlie celebrate.

Guests attended from Garwood, Nada, Richmond, Rosenberg, Wharton, Bay City, Sugar Land, Katy, College Station and El Campo.
