DAR meeting reveals students named to 'Good Citizens' list

The Comfort Wood Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution met Thursday, Jan. 10 at the Wharton County Library. The pineapple bell was rung symbolizing the national theme: "The Spirit of Hospitality Opens Doors of Opportunity." Members and guests were welcomed with a small plaque on a table holding this year's scrapbook and press book.

After the opening ceremony two new members, Gloria Holub of El Campo and Deena Poncik of Robstown, formerly of El Campo, were welcomed as members of the National Society and Comfort Wood Chapter by Regent Hazel Foltyn. Betty Hill, chaplain, gave the oath of membership. Holub's proven lineal descent is from William Armstrong of North Carolina. Poncik's proven lineal descent is from George Harlan of South Carolina.

A message from President General Linda Calvin Gist was read. A thank-you from the 20th Century Museum was read by Treasurer Pat Sanders for a monetary gift.

Annie Stafford, reporting from the National Defender magazine, gave an oral quiz with questions that are on the citizenship test. The "sunshine" report was given by Betty Hill on birthdays and illnesses.

Minutes of the November meeting were read by Gene Jackson, secretary. The treasurer's report was given by Pat Sanders.

Election of officers followed: regent - Hazel Foltyn, vice regent - Annie Stafford, secretary - Gene Jackson, treasurer - Pat Sanders, registrar - Pat Blair, corresponding secretary - Susan Story and chaplain - Betty Hill.

Area high school "Good Citizens" were announced. They are Trey Michael Kulak of Boling High School, Laura Kubes of East Bernard High School, Bobby Jack Polasek of El Campo High School, Arron Lovett of Louise High School and Blaire Elizabeth Zahn of Wharton High School. These students are chosen on academic, patriotic and extra-curricular activities. They will be honored at a reception on Feb. 9 at the Wharton County Historical Museum.

Betty Hill gave a report on women's issues relating to the heart and announced a clinic in East Bernard entitled "Home Healthy Food." It will be held at the Methodist Church at 9 a.m., Feb. 9 and hosted by Delta Kappa Gamma International.

SeeWee Dupuy, conservation chairman, led a discussion on ways members can recycle and conserve natural resources.

Area high schools are collecting for the DAR's "January White Give" benefiting the Michael E. DeBakey Hospitality House in Houston, which serves veterans' families. Members also brought paper goods that will be taken to the facility.

DAR will be submitting a resolution for their vote of acceptance or denial a proclamation to promote July 1-4, 2008 as "The American Family Reunion" to the Texas State Daughters of the American Revolution.

Plans for the Good Citizens and Community Service awards reception being held Feb. 9 were finalized. Hostesses will be Betty Hill, Gene Jackson and Annie Stafford.

Delegates for the state conference being held at the Hilton Dallas Lincoln Centre March 13-15 are Hazel Foltyn, Annie Stafford and Gene Jackson.

The meeting was adjourned by the ringing of the pineapple bell. Members enjoyed refreshments of drinks and cookies furnished by hostesses Gloria Holub and Hazel Foltyn.
