Bay City no match for 'Birds
In a game Head Coach Philip Spenrath practically referred to as a must-win, the 'Birds defeated Bay City 58-49. It was El Campo's first home game against a district opponent this season. El Campo fell at Terry Jan. 11 to start district play with a loss. Now, the 'Birds are 1-1 in district and 17-4 overall. The Blackcats challenged El Campo early in the game due to the Ricebirds' slow start. The 'Birds only made 5 of 17 shots in the first quarter, including 1 of five 3-point attempts. Bay City's defense kept El Campo in check with 4 steals and allowed the 'Cats a few extra shots. It was the Ricebirds' rebounding game, led by Larry Williams with 4, that kept El Campo close. By the end of the quarter, Bay City led 12-11. The second quarter was all El Campo. Shooting improved slightly for the 'Birds, but a major defensive effort helped them gain a good lead on the Blackcats. El Campo made 7 steals in the quarter and forced 8 turnovers. The Ricebirds pulled down 14 rebounds, 9 of which were offensive and led to second chance baskets. Travis Pflughaupt led the 'Birds with 6 boards in the quarter and helped El Campo take a 28-20 lead at halftime. The Ricebirds enjoyed their biggest lead of the night in the third quarter. Great defense held the Blackcats to 7 shots and forced 9 turnovers. At one point, the 'Birds pulled ahead 39-26. Bay City fought back to cut El Campo's lead to 41-30 but by the end of the third, it was too late for a complete comeback. The Ricebirds' momentum carried them through the fourth quarter to claim victory over Bay City 58-49.
