New gym still awaits doors, two canopies
By BRENDA SOMMER bsommer@leader-news.com

El Campo ISD's new high school practice gym is not quite finished after all.

The practice gym and the new middle school on FM 2765 both came about as the result of a $19.9 million bond package approved in 2005. Construction on both projects was delayed by unusually rainy weather in January and February and again in June and July, and also because of a shortage of brick masons.

The district officially accepted the new practice gym as of Nov. 12, although its original completion date was Aug. 6.

According to the latest construction update prepared for the ECISD board of trustees, canopies and replacement doors for the gym were to arrive and be installed last week by construction manager Weaver & Jacobs Constructors.

But ECISD Superintendent Mark Pool said yesterday those parts arrived Monday and Tuesday.

"I went by there today and saw their truck," Pool said. "They're not finished but they're working on it."

The missing canopies cover the gym's northwest door and one that ties Building C into the bus ramp canopy. The doors in question did not fit properly, Pool said.

"First, they sent wrong doors, which were not what was specified and not cut to fit the hinges," Pool said, adding those were rebuilt then installed. "On the double doors going into storage area, there was a gap I could get my thumb in where the doors come together."

As well, Pool said the double door from the foyer to gym was sloping out of square.

The district, which won't make its final payment of $314,487 on the project until its satisfied with the job, is also awaiting replacement and installation of freight damaged toilet partitions.

"Some of them initially were freight damaged, with gouges and scratches during shipping, so they ordered new ones and some of those are freight damaged," Pool said. "They're just trying to get some here that don't have gouges in them."

Pool said yesterday those partitions, if they arrived intact, could have been installed Monday or Tuesday.
