EC takes 1st in Wharton tournament

El Campo's boys varsity golf team came away with top honors in their first tournament of the year.

The Ricebirds took first place in the Wharton Boys Invitational Jan. 14 at Wharton Country Club. Cullen Pickett, Chris Quinn, Jordan McClain, Trey Krpec and Nick Gutierrez combined to finish with a high score of 320, 12 strokes better than second-place Sweeny.

Along with the team placing, Pickett and Quinn claimed individual honors.

Pickett had the best outing of any golfer and shot 78 to finish first. Quinn claimed third place by shooting an 80 on the course and winning in a playoff.

El Campo's girls will get their shot at Wharton Country Club Monday morning. After that, the next event is the sub-varsity boys at Fulshear Feb. 8.
