Lady 'Birds get rebound win
By KRIS BAGLEY sports@leader-news.com

L-N Photo by Kris Bagley A Big Statement After losing to Bay City last week, Ebonee Spencer and the Lady 'Birds took out their frustrations on Foster Friday.
The Lady 'Birds outscored Foster in every quarter to cruise to a 62-29 victory and a 3-2 district record Friday night.

El Campo slowly chipped away at the Lady Falcons through the first half until time came to dominate late in the game.

Six Lady 'Birds scored in the opening quarter, with Angel Brooks leading the team with four points. Foster was able to hang with the Lady 'Birds and finished the quarter down 14-10. It was the closest quarter of the game.

Ashley Thomas lit up the Lady Falcon defense with seven points to lead El Campo to a 15-6 score for the quarter and a 29-16 lead at halftime.

With the way El Campo's defense was playing, the girls could have lasted the entire second half with only a free throw and still won the game by one point. Instead, the Lady 'Birds turned up the tempo and ran over Foster for a lopsided win.

El Campo scored 10 points in the first 2 1/2 minutes of the third quarter to take a 39-16 lead. Foster used the rest of the time to build a small comeback. The Lady Falcons were only able to score a couple baskets while El Campo was scoreless over the next few minutes.

Brooks ended the scoring drought with 2 minutes left in the quarter. She came up with a steal and drove the court for a layup. The Lady 'Birds scored 12 points for the quarter and led 41-25.

The fourth quarter was when the Lady 'Birds played their best ball.

Foster opened the quarter with a score, but defense held the Lady Falcons silent until there was 3:30 left in the game. Foster made another shot, but it was the last time the Lady 'Birds allowed their opponent a basket. Foster only scored four points in the quarter.

El Campo combined for six steals, made seven of eight free throws, out-rebounded Foster 10 to five and hit seven of 13 shot attempts in the fourth..

Shae Solomon was the scoring leader for the Lady 'Birds in the fourth. She connected for two field goals and made four free throws to score eight points. Solomon finished with a team-high 14 points on the night.

The Lady 'Birds claimed the fourth quarter 21-4 and won the game 62-29.

Friday's win moved El Campo to 20-5 on the season and dropped Foster to 17-10 and 2-3 in district play.

El Campo traveled to Seven Lakes Tuesday night and will host Lamar Consolidated Friday.
