Lady 'Birds swarm Spartans for victory

The Spartans brought a challenge when they hosted the Lady 'Birds Tuesday.

Earlier in the season, El Campo defeated Seven Lakes 48-28 to start district basketball play with a win. Now, at the start of the second half of district competition, the Lady 'Birds had to fight for a win in Katy and came through with a great second-half effort.

El Campo pulled away from the Spartans in the third and fourth quarters for a 47-37 final score.

Seven Lakes shot the ball well in the first half and stayed close with El Campo on every basket. The Lady 'Birds had more difficulty getting the ball through the hoop, but had several chances that ultimately worked to give them a lead.

At the end of the first quarter, the Lady 'Birds were up 13-11.

Seven Lakes came back in the second quarter to outscore El Campo.

For the entire first half, the Spartans made 8 of 15 field goals and hit their only 3-point attempt. They held the Lady 'Birds to 14 points while scoring 15 in the quarter.

The momentum change in the second quarter was not enough to take a lead over El Campo. By halftime, the Lady 'Birds led 27-26 and were poised for a nice defensive effort in the second half.El Campo held Seven Lakes to only a pair field goals in the third and fourth quarters combined. With the Spartans only making two of 18 shots, the Lady 'Birds easily extended their lead.

The third quarter went to El Campo 12-7 and the fourth 8-4 for a 47-37 Lady 'Bird win over Seven Lakes.

As a team, El Campo struggled in shooting. The girls combined to make 17 of 52 field goals and missed all four 3-point attempts on the night.

It was a tenacious effort on rebounding that helped El Campo to several second-chance shots. The Lady 'Birds ended up with 33 total boards, led by Angel Brooks' 13.

Though El Campo had shooting trouble, seven Lady 'Birds ended up scoring in the game. Brooks, one of El Campo's most consistent scorers led, the team with 18 points.

El Campo used a high-pressure defense to allow as few Spartan baskets as possible. The Lady 'Birds finished the night with a total 18 steals.
