Pioneers best team in zone St. Philip's Girls A basketball team claimed the North Zone Championship Monday with a 39-22 win over Schulenburg St. Rose. The Pioneers held off St. Rose to finish with a nearperfect 8-1 record. Their next game came Wednesday against Shiner St. Ludmilla, the South Zone champion. As of presstime, information from the game was unavailable. In St. Philip's win over St. Rose, Lauren Gregurek was the high scorer for the Pioneers. She led the team with 12 points while Shelby Snyder scored 11, Rebecca Korenek scored 8, Rebecca Dornak scored 5 and Jessica Fucik scored 3 points. Before Monday's championship win, the Pioneers took on Hallettsville Sacred Heart Jan. 17 and Columbus St. Anthony Jan. 9. St. Philip A The Pioneers held off Sacred Heart 29-17 for a great team win. Gregurek led St. Philip with 10 points. Snyder and Korenek both scored 6 points, Fucik scored 3 and Brooke Wallace and Dornak both scored 2 points. St. Philip claimed a wellearned victory over St. Anthony 38-12. Gregurek scored a team-high 18 points while Korenek scored 10, Snyder scored 8 and Wallace and Fucik both scored 1 point. St. Philip B Sacred Heart earned a 15-11 win over the Pioneers in a hardfought game. Taylor Fuechec led St. Philip with 6 points while Roma Thornton and Audrey Anderson both scored 2 points and Kari Wilkins scored 1 point. The Pioneers earned a great win over St. Anthony in a previous match. Columbus could not keep up with the high-scoring Pioneers. St. Philip finished this game with a 22-9 win. Fuechec scored a team-high 8 points while Wilkins, Thornton and Anderson each scored 4 and Michela Thornton scored 2 points. |
