Ricebirds, Hornets earn all-state football awards
Teams were announced throughout the week and a total of six players from the area received honors. The Ricebirds' Anthony Terrell, Troy Lawson and Bryan Skow all made the 4-A roster while Louise's Matthew Blumrick, Cory Hajovsky and Chris Hicks made the 1-A team. Voted on by sports writers throughout the state, the teams were selected based on statistical information and team success during the 2007 football season. Terrell earned third-team honors as a running back. His 1,767 yards and 23 touchdowns on 209 carries helped place him on the roster. Lawson made the third team as an offensive lineman. A junior, he finished the season with 80 pancakes. Skow received honorable mention as a linebacker. He totaled 115 tackles and seven tackles for a loss in his junior season. Blumrick earned third-team honors with 143 tackles, 92 solo tackles and five forced fumbles in his junior season. Hajovsky and Hicks, both seniors, received honorable mention at the secondary position. Hicks had seven interceptions, three fumble recoveries and 56 tackles while Hajovsky had six interceptions and 38 tackles.
Among the Ricebirds' foes to earn awards were Lamar Consolidated's Jacquizz Rodgers, who earned offensive player-of-the-year honors at running back, and Lydell Wilson, who shared coaching honors with Lake Travis' Jeff Dicus. Shiner's Kyle Condel received honorable mention at quarterback.
In other El Campo honors, Terrell and Skow were named as members of the Associated Press all-state football teams shortly after the season ended.
