EL CAMPO MIDDLE SCHOOL BOYS AND GIRLS BASKETBALL UPDATE
8th Grade boys take first in Port Lavaca tournament

El Campo took third place in the Port Lavaca Eighth Grade Basketball Tournament.

The Ricebirds had a nice showing to start the tournament, held Jan. 18 and 19, with a win over Rockport. A loss to Ingleside kept the 'Birds out of the championship game, but El Campo came back with a win over Crain to claim third.

EC vs. Rockport

The Ricebirds started the tournament with a great win over Rockport.

El Campo shut out its opponent in the first quarter to take a 10-0 lead and cruised through the rest of the game for a 42-14 win.

Tanner Schoener led the Ricebirds with 12 points in the game. Bryan Sparks scored 8, Jacorric Malone and Eric Williams both scored 6, DeAndre Pratt scored 5, Cullen Schoener scored 3 and Devontay Allen scored 2 points.

EC vs. Ingleside

The 'Birds ran into a tough match for their second game of the tournament.

Ingleside outscored El Campo in the first half 25-9. The Ricebirds tried to start a comeback in the third quarter and outscored Ingleside 12-8, but the fourth was too much for El Campo. Ingleside won 46-26.

Pratt and C. Schoener were the Ricebirds' leading scorers with 8 points. T. Schoener scored 4 while Castrong Richardson, Allen and Sparks each scored 2 points.

EC vs. Crain

El Campo claimed third place in the tournament with a 46-35 win over Crain.

The first quarter was a virtual push as El Campo took an 8-6 lead over Crain, but the second quarter gave the Ricebirds a boost to take the game.

El Campo outscored Crain 19-8 in the second quarter and led 27-14 at the half. Crain stayed close with the 'Birds in the second half, but it was not enough to keep the Ricebirds from winning.

Pratt scored a team-high 11 points for El Campo. Devin Parks scored 8 points, T. Schoener scored 7, Sparks scored 6, C. Schoener and Williams both scored 5, Allen scored 4 and Richardson scored 2 points.

Lady 'Birds get one win in close Briscoe games

The Lady 'Birds had a tough match with Briscoe, but one team came through with a win.

The eighth-grade red basketball team topped Briscoe while the white and seventh-grade teams had difficulties with their opponent.

8th Grade Red

In a close-scoring game, El Campo edged out Briscoe 33-32 for the win.

Lexus Pleasant scored a team-high 14 points for El Campo while Breanna Johnson scored 8, Ja'vonna George, Cathy Villalobos and Aubrey Garcia each scored 3 and Shavonne Shorter scored 2 points.

8th Grade White

Briscoe escaped with a close 18-14 win over the Lady 'Birds.

Ashley Contreras led El Campo in scoring with 10 points while Cara Martin and Chelsey Nemec both scored 2 points.

7th Grade Red

Briscoe pulled away from El Campo in the fourth quarter for a 38-19 win.

The Lady 'Birds trailed 25-17 after the third quarter. Briscoe rallied to outscore El Campo 15-2 in the fourth to secure the win.

Khadijah Martin led the Lady 'Birds with 7 points. Ebonee Robinson scored 4 and Katie Wiesner, Laroysha Robinson, Malikka Sanford and Karleigh Krpec each scored 2 points.

7th Grade White

The Lady 'Birds made a slight comeback attempt but fell short to lose 22-11.

Moving into the fourth quarter, El Campo trailed 20-5. The Lady 'Birds outscored Briscoe 6-2 in the game's fi- nal quarter, but it was not enough to catch their opponent.

Lazara Miranda led El Campo with 4 points while Danielle Lara scored 3 and Shelby Wiesner and Brianna Gonzalez both scored 2 points.

ECMS boys face Briscoe,

Red team gets victory

El Campo Middle School's eighthgrade boys basketball teams took on the Briscoe Eagles Jan. 22 in three close games.

Faced with a tough challenge, the Red team was the only squad able to claim victory over Briscoe. The Eagles managed to pull away from the White and C teams for wins.

EC Red

El Campo came through with a late push to earn a 30-28 win over Briscoe.

After three quarters, the Ricebirds trailed 20-18, but the fourth was strong for the 'Birds. El Campo made a great comeback to outscore Briscoe 12-8 and earn a win on the Ricebirds' home court.

Castrong Richardson led El Campo in scoring with 6 points while Devontay Allen and Cullen Schoener both scored 5, DeAndre Pratt, Bryan Sparks and Devin Parks each scored 4 and Tanner Schoener scored 2 points.

EC White

Briscoe pulled away from the Ricebirds in the second half for a 33- 22 win.

El Campo kept up with Briscoe through the first two quarters. The Ricebirds trailed after the first 5-4 but

outscored the Eagles 6-5 in the second to tie the game at 10-10 at halftime.

Briscoe came out with a high-scoring

attack and topped the 'Birds in the

third 11-4 and fourth 11-8 for the win over El Campo.

Anthony Aguilar and Jacorric Malone both led the Ricebirds with 6 points. Ryan Reyna scored 4 while Anthony Cruz scored 2 points.

EC C Team

A closely-matched game turned into a Briscoe win.

El Campo and Briscoe traded baskets through the first quarter and entered the second tied at 11-11. Neither team could get another shot to fall until the third quarter.

The Eagles edged out El Campo in the third 8-4 and took a 19-15 lead with one quarter left to play. Both defenses held on through the fourth quarter to prevent either team from scoring and Briscoe went on to defeat El Campo 19-15.

Ryan Herman led the Ricebirds with 6 points while Brandon Shelton scored 5 and Quinton Kubala scored 4 points.
