Alumni set to take on EC softball This weekend the past meets the present. The 2008 Lady 'Bird softball team will host a scrimmage against some of the Lady 'Bird alumni Saturday at Youth Memorial Park beginning at 6 p.m. "I have had this idea for a few years now," Shane Wagner, El Campo's head coach, said. "I always thought it would be a blast to have some of my former players on the field again. Just to see them and to see them on the field will be fun." Tickets cost $5 for adults and $3 for students and children. Nine former players will participate in the game. 2003 graduates Cori Bram and Amanda Puentes, 2005 graduates Natalie Kainer, Heather Kight, Rachael Ryan, 2006 graduates Katie Kainer and Lauren Wells and 2007 graduates Haley English and Suzanne Buzek will all play for the alumni. "As far as talent level, this will probably be one of our toughest opponents we play this year," Wagner said. "Eight of the nine have earned an all-district honor with six of them earning at least one first-team all-district honor. I know they may be a little rusty from being away from the game for a while, but I imagine they will get back into rhythm pretty quick. "Although it will be fun to see all my former players again, we (the current Lady 'Birds) have a lot of work to do. This will be our last scrimmage before our first game against Wharton next Tuesday. We are still trying to find our identity and mesh together as a team." |
